City of Glendale announces they're ending the lease agreement after the 2021-22 season, at which point, the Coyotes will be homeless.

Consider this the obligatory "Quebec" response.

I think now's the time for Fertitta and Bettman to make their Houston move. From the 11th market to the 4th.

If Tempe was gonna happen, it would've happened by now.

I'm sad for the hockey fans in Phoenix, who do exist, and the potential dismantling of all the youth hockey infrastructure there, but the Yotes and Glendale were a loveless marriage from the jump and it's about time things came to a head. The Yotes took the shiny new arena in a far-flung suburb, while Glendale quickly realized the complexities of professional sport economics and were in over their heads. A bad mix.

I like the Yotes branding and the city of Phoenix has loads of potential on the east side, but a year is not enough time to get an arena done (or even a shovel in the ground), and there's no way Glendale or the Suns would rent out their barn while the Yotes build their own competing arena. Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum is nowhere near up to code, can't imagine it's an option. But it exists.

The Sun Devils are building a 5,000 person arena in Tempe, which is what the Yotes should've latched on to but didn't: https://thesundevils.com/news/2020/12/1 ... arena.aspx

I heard Barroway had a plan to build a new arena in Scottsdale but the local chapter of the Goldwater Institute went out of their way to block it. He finally got frustrated and bailed.

To me, too much damage has been done. The Glendale arena was fueled by stupidity and hubris and has been hemorrhaging money for a long time now. It's finally time to rip the band-aid off. It's a shame because hockey could've worked there. It's obvious there's a culture and fanbase that would support a successful team for generations. And hey, look, if not for them, Auston Matthews would not be in the NHL right now.

I hope they just move the franchise to Houston and try again, correctly this time, in a few years.

If they wanted to be in Scottsdale, they needed to push it as the Coyotes don't go deep in the playoffs, so golfing will be their priority and they'll build another PGA course alongside the arena. Never mind that there are countless others there already, it would have been approved. Golf is king in Scottsdale.

CapFriendly: Coyotes have up to 8 picks in the first two rounds in 2022... I can only imagine how badly they're going to screw that up...

Yeah, there is no truth to the rumours of the team moving to Houston.

Well if they're locked out of their own arena, they will need to play somewhere.

That somewhere else appears to be the unfinished ASU hockey barn out in Tempe. It'll be open for next NCAA season. The catch? It only fits 5,000 people. Insert joke about the number of Coyotes fans in existence here.

Yotes may be stuck there 3-4 years while they get their own arena situation figured out.

Wow. Surprised the NHL would allow that, but then again, it's the NHL.

Will that lower the escrow the players will get? Keep the cap lower?

Wouldn't the solution here have been to just partner up and build a bigger rink with ASU? Weren't they talking about building a rink in Tempe anyways? Geez.

They didn’t have the necessary votes from the city council to approve a full venue build.

Don’t get at all why this farce is continuing. No…wait, yes I do.

That makes sense. They probably want a ton of public dollars, council looks at what's been going on for years and say Fuck That.

People must think Arizonans are easy marks, because the baseball team is looking for a new ballpark. Their current one isn't that old, but apparently wasn't well built at the time and is decaying at an astonishing rate. Needless to say, The DBack owners ain't paying for that.

It's also that the Phoenix Valley has had construction/expansion for the past 60+ years. The people think building new stuff is a constant occurrence. New highways every year, constant expansion out into the desert. My brother lived on the edge of the desert when he bought his house. 5 years later there was over 6 miles to the desert.

It's actually happening: the Yotes will play in a 5,000 person arena for the foreseeable future.

Why do I get the feeling Bettman will use this as an excuse to increase escrow/maintain flat cap?

Can't believe the NHLPA would sign off on this.
