Sounds like Coyotes have gone to court and have filed a temporary restraining order. They're hoping that a judge will rule that the club has been immediately hurt in this process. What's happened is that the Coyotes have lost a $15 million dollar agreement where the City of Glendale is paying them an exorbitant arena management fee - the biggest fee of it's kind in the NHL.

So if the temporary restraining order is granted, that moves onto the team's request for a permanent injunction. This would be a legal phase where the team is saying to the Court that what the City of Glendale did was illegal, they should not have been allowed to have their vote in the first place (City voted 5-2 in favour of cancelling the agreement). If they get that permanent injunction then that goes away.

But here's where the news gets troubling for the team. The Coyotes are going to be asking for claims upwards of $200 Million dollars in damages. Well, good luck seeing any of that money anytime soon. The City is not going to have to pay ANY claim until all of the legal avenues are explored (Discovery Process, a Trial, 2 Appeals Courts in Arizona) so this could literally drag on for years until the team, even if they win, sees a dime.

All of this coming from a team that is widely assumed to be bleeding cash, losing $30 million or more per year, who knows if they can afford to absorb more losses. Their ratings were down 30% last year and their attendance was worst in the NHL.

The Mayor of Phoenix has apparently reached out as well to help. US Airways Arena downtown is always a stop gap solution but it's not really suited for hockey in the long term. At least this would buy them some time until they figure out what they are going to do.

Seems like the Coyotes days in Arizona are numbered.

The soon-to-be-called Talking Stick Arena (formerly US Airways Arena) was built in 1992 -- old by NBA arena standards, but not old enough to get rid of. The city owns the barn.

There's also the smaller Phoenix Colisseum (about 14k for hockey) that could be used if Talking Stick is too booked. Or, they could play in both stadiums for a year.

Thing is, will Phoenix be in any mood to house the Coyotes? Things are changing. Mayors are starting to bring in the public into arena deals. Nenshi is doing it in Calgary to the Flames frustration. Anaheim's mayor is doing it as well, blocking the Angels from basically obtaining free land for parking. Minneapolis is balking at proposals for a new MLS stadium after getting tapped out by the Vikings and Twins.

But, of course, old habits are tough to break. Detroit might build a taxpayer subsidized arena for the Pistons instead of, you know, forcing the Red Wings and Pistons to share the one they're already building.

This $200m figure seems particularly ridiculous, BTW. If the ruling goes in the Yotes favour, they still get the money from Glendale as per the lease, so it's $200m above the remainder on the lease (which is less than $200m):

Barroway is giving up his majority ownership stake of the Coyotes. Will stay on in a reduced capacity.

It's actually the gift that keeps on taking. They should rename the team the Arizona Tapeworms.

That's the esteemed little NHL commissioner who keeps making those statements.

They kinda remind me of the post-lockout era Isles jerseys.

Well that's it. Case closed. I don't see another issue ever coming up again.

Keep the lights on long enough till they make a new dual-purpose arena in downtown PHX.

Speaking of which, here's an interesting article on that: http://ktar.com/22/1850612/New-downtown ... bumpy-road

At least it's a long-term deal and we won't have to listen to this again...

The City of Glendale is looking for a new arena manager, which is funny because the current manager is Coyotes ownership.

Also it appears as though the Yotes have been understating their losses and are shortchanging the city.
