The city will no longer pay the Yotes 15M a year. An army of NHL lawyers have been dispatched.

Coyotes owner Andrew Barroway didn't bother to show up. There's a chance to renegotiate a deal, but yeah, the fundamental problems remain.

The NHL vows to fight to uphold the agreement.

I like the succinctness of this op-ed: http://www.azcentral.com/story/ejmontin ... /28780347/

They're going to move. It's pretty obvious. Glendale is just ending the suffering now.

This is a money quote. Gary Bettman on May 12, 2011:

Quote:
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman refuted reports Thursday that an announcement was imminent on the sale and relocation of the Atlanta Thrashers to Winnipeg.

"So people just make this stuff up, right?" said Bettman, who was attending Game 7 of the Western Conference semifinals between the Detroit Red Wings and San Jose Sharks. "Where's the accountability from all the people who a month ago were saying that Phoenix was definitely going? Whatever is being written [about Atlanta] is being made up."

There are 4 possible outcomes. The least likely involves the Yotes finding a home in Phoenix long term. It's Seattle, Portland, and Quebec are the top 3. They could move to Portland pretty much immediately if Paul Allen wanted them. Most likely they drag this thing out a year.

Here's an idea from someone: a temporary move to Vegas. Gives them a chance to test the water there while Phoenix figures out whether it wants to build a NBA/NHL-friendly arena.

Moving them to Portland keeps the East/West balance in place if they expand to Seattle or Vegas, but it'd be silly to avoid Quebec just for a 16/16 split. Still think we might see 33 teams.

There is zero chance they move to a location bookmarked for expansion (Seattle, Vegas), due to the expansion fees that Bettman and the NHL owners would receive. There is nothing in it for the NHL to move a team except to get rid of a ball ache. Quebec would be a stretch in the short term because no ownership groups have come to the table and it would screw up East/ West league balance. Never heard that Portland was even a possibility, seems too small a market. My money's on Phoenix some way, some how. Isn't there an arena in downtown Phoenix (i.e. Suns facility)? What a joke. The Yotes - the gift that keeps on giving.

Quebecor would be the owner of any potential NHL team in Quebec. They're trying to not Ballsilie it by going public, though.

Allen almost bought the Coyotes in 2013. He's publicly stated he'd love to have an NHL tenant in their rink.

Portland is bigger than Raleigh, Buffalo or Nashville. It's not huge but it's got a decent size and a long hockey tradition, and a ready building with a potentially deep pocketed owner. Allen wants a discount on a relocation (no expansion fees for him) or just a tenant.

Is that the Mulroney group or are they tied to PQ in some way? I heard there was a PQ bid out there.

Both! Mulrouney is now the Chairman of Quebecor, taking over from Pierre-Karl Peladeau who is now the leader of the PQ

Hmmm NHL and the politics not sure that would mix.

NHL already switched from RDS to TVA (Bell to Quebecor) for their French language coverage, so they're in there already.

God this is so fucking stupid. Either the NHL is purposely trying to get out of the deal to move the team or get a more favourable deal; or they need to fire their legal advisers. After all of the fucking shit they've put themselves through, they go and decide to do something that could be seen as in violation of the deal and could cancel it? Really? Seriously? This guy that they hired, they absolutely had to have this one guy so much as to risk this? Or did they have a backdoor deal with him like they did with the Devils punishment with the Kovalchuk contract and just continued along Bettman's thinking that they can do no wrong and hired him figuring nothing would come of it. And that Glendale should be grateful for having such a great deal for their arena and city!!!

This whole thing stinks.

I think this is on the new owners, but not entirely sure. Final approval of sale to the new owners was approved in Aug 2013

Isn't the deal highly favorable to the Coyotes and the new owners? I thought I read the Yotes keep a large portion of all proceeds, and have some pretty easy out clauses. Highly doubt they'll get a more favorable deal elsewhere if true, though they'll get better attendance.

I don't blame Glendale for bailing, though I'm not sure they can at this point.

Yeah, I always forget that they're actually owned now. But wasn't the NHL heavily involved in the deal with Glendale? Why wouldn't they do their due diligence?

Exactly, why would they? Why would they hire someone with the slightest connection to the deal that could potentially hurt it?
