NASA super excited about doing something that was done better 50 years ago but whatever floats their boat (pays their bills).

Props to Intuitive Machines

The expectations for space exploration certainly aren't what they used to be. But its stuff like this that should remind everyone of how amazing the initial race for the moon was.

Me, personally, I am more into this:

So, anyway I had to do a little more research to figure out what this brother was so excited about........his statement was super bold and I figured I had to be missing something.

Quote:
In December 2017, then-President Donald Trump ordered NASA to return astronauts to the moon in the relatively near future. This directive gave rise to a broad and ambitious program called Artemis, which aims to establish a long-term, sustainable human presence on and around the moon by the end of the 2020s — and to use the knowledge gained in doing so to help get astronauts to Mars by the late 2030s or early 2040s.

NASA plans to set up one or more Artemis bases in the moon's southern polar region, which is thought to harbor lots of water ice. Before sending astronauts there, however, the agency wants to collect more data about this little-explored area — to help determine, for example, just how much water it contains and how easy this crucial resource is to access.

So NASA established another program called CLPS ("Commercial Lunar Payload Services"), which books rides for agency science instruments on robotic moon landers built by American companies.

"The goal here is for us to investigate the moon in preparation for Artemis, and really to do business differently for NASA," Sue Lederer, CLPS project scientist at Johnson Space Center in Houston, said during a press conference on Feb. 12. "One of our main goals is to make sure that we develop a lunar economy."

And that's where Intuitive Machines comes in.

I guess at least it didn't crash until it tipped over.

We can take pictures of the universe and have 4k video everywhere...we can put this technology in every cell phone but somehow we can't incorporate this technology into a camera on a robotic lander under a 118 Million dollar budget.

If you're a little dismayed by the quality of Odysseus' images (not LRO's, those are always surprisingly high-resolution), you can blame the complicated, almost twisty landing situation the lander had to endure on Feb. 22.

Hopefully this Eagle Cam provides better pictures.

Quote:
And at the end of the day, even with its hiccups, Odysseus is a lander that'll surely be going down in history. It's the first private spacecraft to reach the lunar surface and the first successful proof-of-principle for NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services program, meant to revolutionize the way we see lunar exploration's accessibility play out in the future. Alas, we'll soon need to say goodbye.

Are you in the path of the eclipse? Vermonters, Montrealers, Toronto, Detroit, Buffalo people.....

Even last year was only partial and it was cool as hell. Looks like around 60% again this year so should be somewhat fun.

Yeah, out East it's supposed to be 100% coverage. Here in BC only a little over 25%

Maybe we should organize another space trip for various billionaires...

Yeah we're close to 100% coverage I think but not in the exact path of totality.

They're expecting 1M people in Niagara Falls, a town of about 100k. I do not understand how there are 1M people who think they need to fucking go the Falls, and battle the insane traffic and crowds that will result. I've driven there on a long weekend and even then it was insane.

At least there will be some additional public transit, hopefully going to remove a few thousand cars off of the road?

That does not sounds like a good time in my book just to see a brief moment of totality....crazy!

I'll never understand "going where everyone else is going" for any event. I've always wanted to be away from crowds.
