So in my youth (pre-Atari) I played a tonne of games both board and card games with family and friends and the occasional jig saw puzzle with the grand parents. And then D&D in my late teens.

I was quite surprised to find from my youngish 30 year old friends that these things have been having a bit of a revival with those who never played much of them when they were younger as they were totally computer game focused. Myself I have started playing again with friends the last couple years and really enjoying it. Picked up both Cards Against Humanity and Code Names in the last few months and loved both. Although CAH makes me feel old in the sense that I can not fathom playing this game with teenagers, I was so innocent at their age, they know way too much.

Been looking for 2 player games, anyone have any recommendations?

I bought Ticket to Ride for Christmas a year ago and I haven't broken into it. Now seems to be a good time. 2-5 players.

My inner hillbilly also enjoys a good game of Cribbage and a spirited game of 10,000 on the dice.

We have a bunch of old board games. We pull them out at parties and watch everyone our age light up with memories, and the kids are fascinated by the fact that you don't need to charge them. So it's a novelty that they'd probably get bored of if they had them all the time, but they enjoy playing them.
Pulled out Jenga yesterday and the kids played it for a while. We made some funny rules. Used chopsticks at one point instead of hands, and other weird rules. It was fun for a while.

American's play Cribbage? Didn't know that, always thought it was a Canadian thing.

Well...Pandemic seems like a pretty obvious recommendation under current circumstances...

Naw. My grandfather taught me how to play, but that was well over 30 years ago. I wish I knew where his board was. I always wanted to buy this cribbage board they sold a ways back that was shaped like the number 19, which is of course one of the scores you can't get in the game.

Ticket to Ride is fantastic.

For something simple, Sequence.

Settlers of Catan if you've got the time.

Pandemic is great.

I've got Carcasonne, a tile game, sitting unopened.

CAH is fantastic, thought the Canadian version isn't worthwhile.

29 is a perfect hand so that was likely it.

We have been pulling out the Uno lately with the family. That and spoons is our games to play.

Yea 29 makes more sense, quite a common board type. I've never seen a board shaped like 19.

And Uno and spoons! Hadn't thought of them in years. Lots of fun with them as a kid.

We play Uno with my kids, but I tend to be a dick if I lose that game in particular. Not sure why. Must be some deeply seeded childhood torment about saying Uno, only to get a Draw 4 from someone.

Just curious Chris, do you ever play Cards Against Humanity with your kids? And if so how old were they when you first played?

I don't think we "play" properly. We basically just pull a question card, and then pull an answer card (or two), and laugh or cringe at the outcome. Kind of like adult Mad Libs or something.

Miss18.2 is 11. We started doing this pretty recently. My wife and I have very different parenting views than most. We don't mind the kids cursing (to an extent). They can say pretty much anything if they stub their toe or get hurt, but can't tell anyone to shut up or call someone stupid, or other insults like that, which are all too common in the world today. And I encourage them to sing along to songs like Pennywise's "Fuck Authority", but really disapprove of most songs on the radio that don't use any curses but make it quite clear they're really about sex, and usually not in the most healthy relationship type way. So yeah, if my kids read cards that wind up saying something like "I had a long meeting with", "that kid who won't shut the fuck up about dinosaurs", we all have a laugh (they can say that about a fictional character, but not a sibling/friend). But we don't let the 11 year old listen to Cardi B. Miss18.1 is 17 and going off to college in a few months (unless we're all still quarantined). She's got much freer range on music, etc. Being a girl playing hockey, she heard all kinds of stuff, and I overheard some of it said to her from the bench, so there's never really been the standard parental pretending my teenage daughter doesn't know what things mean.

lol, no you're not playing it right. I ask because I recently played with some friends and they allowed their respective 13 year old daughters to play. I was thinking "you got to be fucking kidding me?" Anyways it was actually fun and the kids knew way more than I did at their age. However it was just bizarre when one of them won the game. The game winning question was "what do boys like?" and her card answer was "My bright pink fuck hole"

Anyways after thinking about it a bit, 13 year olds have been all over Urban Dictionary, and checked out porn. So I guess they know far more than I did so I shouldn't compare..........but it does seem very disconcerting to this old man.

I definitely haven't seen a card with that answer. Many have insults or other curses, but nothing like that.
