This is a very sad story. Remember him as a highly skilled and fast skater. He was a 1st overall draft pick in 1986 by the Detroit Red Wings and won a Stanley Cup with the Oilers in 1989. Now he's homeless. Pretty appalling how the NHL turned his back on him and he is now forgotten. Hopefully this story will change that. Mental illness impacts us all.

Don't remember what video game but way back in the day always played Chicago because Roenick, Amonte, and Murphy was an unstoppable line.

Have not watched yet but will.

Yeah it's 15 minutes long but worth it IMO. One of the things that was discussed was mental illness. TSN and the family sort of trace it back to one particular hit, but I am not sure it was more deep rooted than that and emerged as a consequence of the concussions or physical contact over the course of his playing career.

I listened to this but not too sure........it sounds like Joe is doing OK..he's suffering from some bouts of depression and alcohol dependency but he's got land and properties...

Ah...listened to this again trying to find my disconnect...that was a Joe Murphy joke!!!!.....he calls all of Kenora his land! He does seem very off after watching the finding Murphy video. A lot of it looks like drugs but regardless the hockey community should be helping this guy!

I like probably many others best remember Joe from NHL 93 and 94 where he was running on that Hawks team with Amonte and JR.

This is very similar to the case of that guy from the Kings currently living homeless in California. Very unsettling.

Thanks for that. Mental health is always an interesting issue. Joe is doing things his way whether we feel its right or wrong doesn't really matter to him. I have a relative like this so I can somewhat relate.

One wonders how much his illness was related to being a hockey player versus how much was genetic predisposition.
