Noted Canadian author W.P. Kinsella, whose story "Shoeless Joe" was adapted to film as "Field of Dreams," dies at the age of 81.

One of his short stories still resonates with me after all these years, I think it was in the collection "The Thrill of the Grass" but I could be wrong. It was called "The Baseball Spur" and it's about as soul-crushing a tale as any I've read. What seems to be on the surface about a man's troubled relationship and his buddy's inability to know when to quit his pipe dream of being a big-league player becomes a treatise on love and heartbreak and just how incredibly hard it can be for a man to move on. Fantastic stuff. If you have never read his stuff, you really should.

I shouldn't have been as surprised as I was about this.

Fidel Castro finally croaks at 90.

People seem to be glossing over some of the horrible things he did, but rest assured he was a tyrant. Hope Cuba has brighter days ahead.

THE FUCK...this year is just plain ridiculous.

I didn't even have time to post a tribute to the great John Glenn, dead at 95. He survived plummeting to Earth in a raging ball of flame, yet even he couldn't make it through 2016. He deserves his own thread but fer cryin' out loud I can't keep up here.

Two-thirds of Emerson, Lake, and Palmer didn't make it with Emerson dying in March and Lake dying this month. So yeah, Palmer's gotta tough it out the next couple weeks or so.

And for fuck's sake...Alan Thicke was outside playing hockey with his son (I'm assuming that's Robin) and died of a heart attack at 69.

Zsa Zsa Gabor dead at 99. My co-worker said she wasn't sure as to the cause of death. I replied "being 99?"

Fuck this fucking year. Three of my favorite musicians died.

A very sad and possibly alarming portent that three icons of gay/trans culture have died before 2017.

So sad. Drives home the fact that landing on the Moon is the single greatest accomplishment in human history...and we haven't even come close to that since that man last walked there.
