So got called to Jury duty and get the whole civic duty things so did not think much of it. Until I saw the compensation chart, your telling me with all the money the government waste it can't compensate Jury members for it's time? Most people who get caught up in these long term month long trial must go through some serious financial grief what an effed up system.

Do you not get paid by your company for jury duty leave? Although for self-employed I could see it but I think they get exempted. I believe that one can also ask for an exemption if it causes financial hardship.

No company does not pay so got a letter from them saying that extended periods would be hardship both for the company and myself, which as a department unto myself that is absolutely the case.

I still think it's B.S. that Canadian courts have the lawyers wear robes but not wigs. If you're gonna go, go big.

Hell, jurors should wear them too.

Agreed. The costumes make the show.

Phoned the court and explained I can do a few days but that weeks would be a big problem and they said all that is considered so I am going.

Part of me suspects that the financial burden is intentional to makes sure any hold outs are motivated to come to a decision.

Man...nothing for the first 50 days either. From what I can tell(and I probably looked this up before), our company pays while on jury duty.

When I got called recently(can't remember if I got called during university and was excused), they managed to call me for 2 cases that hit a little too close to home and I was excused. I was rescheduled for a 3rd selection but it was cancelled.

I've never done it, been living in the USA for ~20 years but always had the out that I was an immigrant from Canada green card holder not citizen. Now I am a US citizen so will have to do my duty next time.

I've been called twice and but not selected either time. Interesting process.

Nearly got selected to the jury. It turns out because it was a special case where the defendant could be prejudiced against, they needed to two potential jurors to assist in selecting the jury. They chose me at random to help, and in return they exempted me from this jury cycle.

A pretty cool inside look into the jury selection process, and it only took a couple of hours. I basically pre-approved jury candidates before they were presented to the prosecution and defence.
