I've loaned a fair bit with only one default. And even that person paid back most of it, if I recall.

I just loaned to someone in Cambodia. I think Ian might have as well. The people of that country have been fucked over and have it pretty bad. They make do with what they can.

Not Kiva, but Anam and I visited http://www.cambodialandminemuseum.org/ while we were touring Angkor Wat. They do amazing work and the founder's story is inspiring. They are a de-mining team that goes around to the rural and really poor areas that are low priority for other de-mining organizations. They also have a school where they house and teach kids who were landmine victims or some from families too poor to raise them. We donated to them this year and if you're looking for a group or cause to donate some money to, this is a really good one.

Our only stop was in Siem Reap, unfortunately. We didn't have enough time to see the killing fields either..

I was close to getting another loan out and was hoping this month would put me over the edge but then I got nothing. Looking back, my current client is repaying all over the map in terms of rate and is actually three months ahead, with two months where she hasn't paid anything:

http://www.kiva.org/lend/563833

I've had pretty good success with this, haven't lost any money at all and have helped a decent amount of people. Should put another $25 in there now that I'm back on my feet financially.

FYI, 2 for 1 today on certain loans. Certain foundations will match your contribution for certain loans.

Not Kiva, but this is a great organization. You can donate and pick gifts for agriculture and health among other things. Stuff that keeps on giving too like seeds, tools, chicks, cows, sheep, school supplies, water solutions...tons of great stuff.

A lot of the programs are sponsored and your donation can be matched many times over.

Lent today to this woman from Azerbaijan who just wants to sell market vegetables on the side while working as a seamstress. Her loan expires today and she's a way off, if anyone has $25 they can put aside to her:

Donated. Just a heads up - the loan has been pre-dispersed, so she already has the funds I think. I'm sure that she'd get re-listed or something.

A lot of loans I've seen are pre-dispersed now, which seems to me that it would indicate that they are giving the loans before they even raise the money, so they are expecting the money to come in. Good sign?

Maybe they have a guarantee from some lenders to make up the difference in the end.

Yup, that's also possible. I know that they have had some matching promotions.

You ever read the updates on the people you lend to? Someone stole the mechanical saw my Honduran carpenter bought with his loan.
