I like the updated uniforms and it looks like the SFX will be top-notch. However I'm not digging the updated bridge. Oh well, it can't suck worse than Insurrection or Nemesis (or hell, even Enterprise) did, so I'm still really looking forward to it.

My comment had more to do with all the pretty boys on there. This is supposed to be about Kirk et al in the early years - where's all the eye candy for us hetero-types?

Rachel Nichols and Diora Baird will be playing Orions--the green-skinned stripper aliens seen in the original series. Google either one of them, they should most definitely suffice.

If you're going to see "Quantum of Solace" you're in for a triple treat, for on top of the film (which for the most part has gotten solid reviews) I hear you'll be getting the latest "Watchmen" trailer as well as the newest STAR TREK trailer. The link is just to a bootleg though.

In Canada I saw neither of those trailers with the Bond flick.

Oh movie was good, If chase scenes where like food groups this movie was a complete diet. They covered them all.

I'd give it a four out of five.

Finally saw The Incredible Hulk last night, and loved it. A thousand times better than that Ang Lee dreck that came out around 5 years ago. And while the CG is still cheesy, it didn't come off nearly as cartoonish as the previous film. Besides, this time there was a far better villain, played by the best bastard-portrayer out there, Tim Roth.

On top of that, plenty of little details written in for us comic book geeks, what with references to Hulk villains Doc Samson and the Leader (on top of the whole Mr. Green/Mr. Blue thing)...a shame Marvel is hellbent on this stupid Avengers movie, which apparently will hold off on the sequel. Maybe they can use the extra time to convince Edward Norton to come back for it.

Just saw Quantum of Solace (had the Star Trek preview, not the Watchmen one, although I saw a preview for that some months ago).

All I can say was... WTF was that? Not only do they seem to presume that I saw Casino Royale yesterday (I didn't remember a damned thing they were talking about, even after I managed to figure out that they were referring to the earlier movie), I also didn't have a clue the entire time what was going on. Both plot- and action-wise. It didn't help that we were in the second row and craning our necks, but honestly, I can't remember the last time I was that lost. Granted I haven't slept much lately, but that wasn't the only thing.

I just by coincidence had rematched Casino Royal two weeks ago, but I can see how if I hadn't it would be a little weird.

Australia

Yick. Not even if Nicole Kidman were to somehow turn back the clock and botox injections to look as uh-mazingly hot as she did in "Far and Away" would this 3-hour dreck have been noteworthy. I unfortunately got dragged into this on account of it being my mother-in-law-to-be's birthday, and took more solace in the Captain-n-Coke and free popcorn the new theatre by my house provided than the actual entertainment value on screen.

It isn't a bad movie, in fact I would have preferred it be bad. It was just...meh. Over 3 hours of meh to be exact. Yes, yes, the half-aboriginal child was cute as a button, and veteran Aussie actors Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Bryan Brown, and David Wenham all have notable performances (it's a nice bit of irony that in a movie set in Australia and ENTITLED Australia, she plays a fucking Brit), but really...the contrived, predictable plot and every pretentious cliche you find in these so-called "epic" movies were running rampant in this snoozer. You know you're in for a long ride when you're actually relieved that Jackman and the obligatory old-wise-and-mysterious Aborigine shaman show more skin than Kidman. My God, the rotting carcass remaining from our Thanksgiving exploits had more meat on them than Nicole is sporting here. Someone phone Keith Urban and tell him to feed his wife something lest she get thinner than the plot of "Days of Thunder."

Anyway, if you too find yourself fenced into this flick like the cattle Jackman's character "droves" from place to place, be sure to buy the large popcorn and the smallest beverage you can get a hold of. On second thought, get the biggest bucket of carbonated slime you can carry into the theatre--that way you have a built-in excuse to leave!

Interesting... The Gen. II site has been locked and, I believe, deleted from inactivity... RIP, Gen. II.

Anyway, I don't recall if this has ever been reviewed here but:

Swartboek (Black Book), 2006

I understand that this is the first Paul Verhoeven-directed film shot in Holland in more than 20 years. It is the story of Rachel Steinn/Ellis de Vries, a Dutch/Jewish entertainer who joins the Resistance movement near the end of WWII. Given it's story setting, one would expect the typical set pieces: Holocaust scenes, dedicated Resistance fighters, disturbing scenes of torture and profligate Nazi excess, and great sets and period costumes. But there are also surprises here... This story plays more like a detective thriller than your typical WWII holocaust movie. We're introduced to Rachel (the beautiful Carice van Houten), who is a former entertainer hiding in a farmhouse and protected by an overzealous Dutch farmer who insists on her conversion to Christianity as a price of his protection. A B-17 bomber drops its load of bombs (inadvertently, it would appear) on the farmhouse in an effort to evade German fighters and Rachel's hideout is destroyed. She finds her way to the Dutch Resistance, which re-unites her with her family, and other wealthy Jewish families and provide them with safe passage to the Allied lines, which aren't that far since this is set in September '44... Only there's a hitch - the ferry they're using is intercepted by a Nazi gunboat and the entire ferry full of passengers is mowed down, except for Rachel, who has the presence of mind to dive overboard... The Nazis loot the dead bodies and strip them of their jewels and cash. Rachel manages to find her way back to the Resistance and in time, is enlisted to help spy on the Gestapo HQ in the Hague.

The story is pretty compelling (some gratuitous nudity help), and it shows both sides well - the Nazis refer to the Resistance fighters as terrorists, and there is an attempt to portray the dark side of humanity from both sides of the war. I was surprised that I enjoyed this movie as much as I did.

Correction on your Dutch -- it's "Zwartboek" -- but yes, this was an excellent movie.

Though I have to mention one issue with a plot point that you've listed, which I'll put in light grey to avoid spoilers: {the ferry transport that reunites her with her family isn't "intercepted" by Nazis, it was a setup from the beginning.}

What's most interesting about the storyline -- and to my knowledge this isn't a spoiler so much as the central premise of the movie -- is that she 'can't win' because she is seen as a collaborator by the Dutch resistance, for having worked on the inside, despite her motives and her status as a certain victim if they had known her identity. That element of no-way-out struggle, and how her friends suddenly become her enemies despite her being on their side, is the most fascinating aspect of the movie.

I poop on your grayed out spoilers... But I didn't want to give away that part of the story, Jyrki. It was pretty obvious by the way the camera stayed on the Nazi lighting his cigarette that we'd see him again and soon... I do agree that the story was interesting from that premise; how the Nazis made it appear that she was a double agent by feeding the Resistance false information at the end of the war, thereby forcing her into hiding until she could clear her name. I found that it actually played more like a suspense/murder mystery more than your typical WWII Holocaust movie. I also appreciated the other theme - that what unites some people isn't necessarily just related to what uniform (or not) they wear, but what motivates their behavior.
