Many of you here are probably too young to know about Country Dick Montana.
Country Dick Montana was the drummer and part time frontman for the Beat Farmers who along with Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper came out of San Diego in the mid Eighties and were known for their raucous shows. Country Dick was one of a kind who would stand on stage with his stetson hat, trench coat and a beer in his hand singing about drinking, women and anything else sleazy he could think of. During the show he would say to the crowd, "Take me to the bar!" and then crowd surf over to the bar to get a drink then crowd surf back to the stage. He was known to be at the bar before the show and drink with the fans, many of them buying Dick his drinks. Unfortunately his lifestyle caught up to him and he died of a heart attack at the Longhorn Saloon in Whistler Village three songs into the Beat Farmers set. That happened twenty years ago last month.
I never got a chance to see the Beat Farmers being I worked shift work most of my adult life and when they were touring, June (my wife) and I had a young family which kept us busy. I've been practicing my guitar playing for the last six years and am looking to jam around the metro Vancouver area with the possibility of playing in a band. If I ever get the chance to play at the Longhorn, I hope Country Dick's ghost joins me on stage. Here's to the man:
