We used to have a summer concerts thread, then a non summer concerts thread. Let's just have a concerts thread.

I saw a legend last night in Woodinville, Washington. Ringo Starr and his All-Star band played at the Chateau St Michelle Winery. My wife and I were there. In his band were Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer, Gary Wright, Wally Palmar (The Romantics) and Richard Page (Mister Mister, the only member of the group I have no liking for). I have to say, these old guys put on a great show and really rocked the winery. Ringo just doesn't play his Beatles and solo songs, each of his All-Star band members get to play some of their hit songs as well. Derringer did his hit song with the McCoys, "Hang On Sloopy" and later smoked on "Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo," ending with quite the guitar solo. Edgar Winter got a standing O for "Free Ride." He is a striking figure coming out on stage in a white suit and is an excellent frontman. Later, he did a terrific version of "Frankenstein." Gary Wright played "Dream Weaver" and "Love is Alive," Palmar sang "Talking in Your Sleep" and "What I Like About You." Page did the Mister Mister hits "Kyrie" and "Broken Wing." Ringo started off the concert with "It Don't Come Easy" and finished the night with "With a Little Help From My Friends." In between he sang about ten more songs split between his Beatles and solo stuff with Carl Perkin's, "Honey Don't" in there as well. Ringo and the gang played for two hours. For a guy who has been in show biz for over 50 years and is one of the biggest names in entertainment history, he is surprisingly humble and low key on stage. He stated every two years he likes to get an all star band together and tour. Back on July 7th, his 70th birthday, he announced he has no plans of retiring. I recommend if you get a chance to see one of his concerts, do so. My wife is already planning for us to see his next tour.

Sept. 24: The Flaming Lips in Edmonton
Sept. 25: The Arcade Fire in Saskatoon
Sept. 25 (late show): Blitzen Trapper - should be able to fit in: AF playing at CUC, BT playing at a club that starts shows after 11:00
Sept. 26: Cuff the Duke
Sept. 27: Tokyo Police Club
Sept. 29: Caribou
Oct. 4: Japandroids
Oct. 7: Broken Social Scene

Probably won't go to TPC, they aren't that important. Still a ridiculous stretch of concerts.

I saw Public Enemy at the Commodore in Vancouver back in June. It was absolutely amazing !!

I went with an old friend of mine and we thought we'd would just go for the sake of nostalgia and were expecting to see a bit of a has-been, caricature act, but nothing could be further from the truth. It was HOTTT. They really know how to lay it down and rock a crowd.

Flav needs to stick to what he knows best - music, and stay away from reality TV.

Hopefully going to Huey Lewis & The News on Wednesday. This ought to be hilarious. From what I've heard his name should be Hugey Lewis. Biggest cock in rock. I'm gonna try to make the news.

He's coming to town this month...I was mulling over getting tix but just didn't seem worth it just for nostalgia's sake.

Sadly I don't think many big acts make it through this part of the country, unless it's local boy Larry the Cable Guy. Ugh.

I've been recharging my batteries, concert-wise, because now we're heading into the silly season around here:

M.I.A. tonight, Superchunk Thursday, Klaxons Saturday, Foals next Tuesday, then Pop Montreal Wednesday-to-Sunday. Gorillaz at some point. Sloan too (always worth checking out).

I have the previously listed schedule starting tonight. Still find myself oddly jealous of the M.I.A., Superchunk, Gorillaz combo. Only have ever seen M.I.A. of the 3... at a festival.

Will be going to everything on that schedule except Tokyo Police Club, and Cuff the Duke is a maybe.

Caribou's current tour is off da hook.

Japandroids were alright last time I saw them, but they didn't have new material.

Caribou was the first main stage act at Sasquatch on one of the days. I missed most of his set waiting on a BBQ chicken burger back at the campsite. I caught the end, sounded amazing. Definitely had to catch him this time around.

I saw Japandroids last year when their first record was still pretty fresh... fun times.

Arcade Fire stadium show... weird to go to the rink to hear a band, last time I did that in Saskatoon was five years ago for Pearl Jam, which was really just for kicks at the last moment. Saw Oasis at Rexall in Edmonton a couple years back. Sept. 25 happens to be the anniversary of my first real rock concert: 14 years earlier, the Pumpkins absolutely killed in that same building. Good omen. Me and my friends are going up to Edmonton for the Lips, crashing at my sister's place. Then she is coming down with one of her friends for the Arcade Fire and Blitzen Trapper nightcap... and crashing at my place. We're getting too old for this shit, but it's going to be fun.

At the last minute went to see Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa and opener Yela Wolf last night.

There was a lot of weed present before, during and after. I just slept 13 hours.

My sister is trying to get a group together to go to Coachella. This would be in lieu of my annual Sasquatch trip if I were to go. Probably wait until the lineup for Sasquatch is announced on Feb 7 before making up my mind. Palm Springs in April does sound like a plan.

Coachella sold out in record time (51,000 full weekend passes in a week is ridiculous), so Sasquatch wins again by default. Bastards have now included camping on the ticket price, so they're more expensive and their campground sucks ass, so I'm paying more to not stay there. Seriously, if you're over 25 the main campground blows.

Lots of love for old 1990s indie/college rock bands: Archers of Loaf, Guided by Voices, Old 97's... I'm quite pumped about seeing AoL. They were quite popular amongst my group of friends in high school.

It's quite a lot of repeat acts at this year's festival, to be honest. But the undercard is solid.

I saw the Dropkick Murphys last night- for free. Very odd setting- Mohegan Sun casino. WTF? 8000 people packed the arena. I've never seen a show anyplace larger than 2000 capacity. I don't like it at all. Sound sucked. Band was like a gabillion miles away. Boooo to arena rock.

Anyway. They were about the same as when I saw them 13 years ago. Very soon they're going to use up 4000 years worth of traditional Irish music & have to start covering U2.

Opening acts- Frank Turner & the Sleeping Souls. It's like Billy Bragg meets Rancid. Pretty good, but I get annoyed by bands that play like 4 styles of music. I realize they must be more talented than single-style bands, but pick one & roll with it.

Ramshackle Army- good Aussie imitation of DKM. They didn't have any CDs for sale, which was a bummer. I'd have gotten one.
