Not sure he can even afford an axe without taking out another loan...

The Sens make goalie Joey Daccord the first-ever NHL signing from Arizona State University.

that is interesting, wonder how their team is doing at drawing fans and if the fan base is growing. Would be strange to ever see them in the Frozen Four

Agreed. I think I caught some highlights from one of their games this season and their rink is tiny--the stands probably hold as much as most youth league rinks. I'm talking, like, the rink backs up right into a wall-type of scenario. BUT...I think ASU is getting some good funding for all their sports and that's what matters the most for good or bad. I too would like to see them make it far into the tournament soon, we'll see.

Daccord, I believe, will make his NHL debut tonight.

A whole slew of Sens execs are leaving, and they still haven't found this mythical unicorn "Team President" they said they were looking for.

Melnyk found himself after an exhaustive search, did he not?

Interview question 1 to prospective candidates: "Got all your organs in working order?"

Sens met with Patrick Roy, but alas nothing came of it.

Babcock assistant DJ Smith gets the gig. That's too bad, Patty would've been hilarious.

So added intrigue: Melnyk publicly mocked the Leafs for not building a good enough defence this season. Then he went out and hired the assistant coach who ran it.

What a huge, huge letdown from the possibility of Roy, Melnyk, and Dorion all in the same room.

In fairness, maybe Melnyk asked Smith why their D sucked and Smith blamed Dubas' cap management.

The corpse contract of Ryan Callahan gets sent to Ottawa in exchange for goalie Mike Condon.

Usually it's more expensive when you do it without a Condon, but in this case the Sens (once again) get the higher cap hit but save actual dollars.

This is impressive as much as it is insipid.

Quote:
#Sens are estimated to save $10.1M from injury insurance, & saved $5.5M in signing bonus expenses by trading for players whose SB were already paid

While we project the club to have a cap hit of $65.9M, their estimated NHL roster salary expense is $47.5M

The cap floor is $60.2M

Now THAT is the way to tank.

I thought I saw somewhere that teams have to spend 70% of the cap floor in actual dollars. Was surprised to see that.

I wonder if weaponizing cap space will be curtailed in some way in the new CBA. Honestly, if teams are going to be stupid and sign aging players to long-term deals, then they should probably leave things the way they are.

Colin White gets the Christian Dvorak deal: 6 years/4.75M AAV.

I think they really lucked out getting to lock him up before his breakout year. This deal will be a bargain in a year or two.

Thomas Chabot extension: 8 years/8M AAV.

All signs point to him being/becoming an elite defenceman, so even if he doesn't play like an 8M guy, he's the best defenceman they have.
