Not often a player doing badly on a contract season lands a career deal, but this is Lundqvist we're talking about.

Now we get to see Slats squirm. He either has to buy out/trade Richards, or watch the team get gutted. Again.

Really? Even with the cap going up from the Rogers deal?

It's still a bad deal. Henrik usurps Roberto in terms of the stupidity of contracts given to a goaltender.

Oh it'll go up a decent amount, and over time it's speculated it may go well over $100 million(!!!), but I don't think it'll go up nearly enough next season for them to keep Richards, Nash, and Lundqvist AND re-sign Callahan, Girardi, and Brassard, along with the slew of RFA's he's gotta re-up (Kreider, Zuccarello, and John Moore will likely get some decent raises).

I'm almost 100% positive given his dropoff in play that Girardi's a goner, but that still leaves a lot of players to sign with limited cap space.

No, it doesn't, because New York hasn't yet turned the contract into a soap opera.

They need to develop another legit #1 they hang on to for a few years, for it to get to that level. Sorry.

I think Lundqvist is one of the few goalies who is struggling with the new equipment regulations. Plus Goaltenders are just better now -- pure and simple. The structure and geometry of the education combined with the equipment standards and physical size of goalies in today's game have revolutionized the position. Most teams these days have a glut of talent between the pipes with strong 1,2 punch.

Do you mind if I forward that last line to Garth Snow?
