John Tonelli and Butch Goring.

John Tonelli, aka "the original JT" to Isles fans these days, was a fucking bull. Dude would never come out of a corner without the puck. He was huge for them during the dynasty.
Goring was a great 2nd line center, considered "the final piece of the puzzle", and one of the greatest traded deadline acquisitions ever.

If you're astute, you may have caught what many Isles fans are talking about. A guy with the initials JT and a guy who wore 91. Coincidence or trolling of the former captain? I think it's coincidence. Tonelli was long overdue, and he pretty much severed ties with the team after being traded in 85. He lives in NY but never attends Isles events. New ownership wanted to fix that. If you're further astute, you may have realized that OG JT wore 27, which Anders Lee currently wears. Nay problemo! OG JT talked to him and said he was so impressed with Lee that he'd be honored if Lee wore "our" number the rest of his career. Fuck yea.

Butch continues to be the Isles color analyst and on-air druncle (my short word for drunken uncle) character. He gets names wrong, wonders why obvious trips are called penalties, and generally stumbles through each game. But that's something Isles fans have come to love about him. It's the same as when he coached the team.

So that will make 8 players from the dynasty era, aka the Core of 4. Smith, Bossy, Trottier, Gillies, Nystrom, Potvin, and now Goring and Tonelli. Bob Bourne or Ken Morrow may not be far behind. Who knows?
Either way, it's good news the day after a shit show on the ice.

One of the rinks I grew up playing in, and still play in every once in a while. John Tonelli Sports Centre. Older brother's first house was on Tonelli Lane

Milton's own. Part of the first class of inductees into the Milton Sports Hall of Fame.

Awesome! My wife taught his nephew. Kid is a Ranger fan. She yelled at him.

So very interesting...you can't help but think this is just a little shade thrown Tavares's way, but either way it's more than deserved for both guys.

I still want to know the story behind Butch's helmet. Apparently he was one of the first players to ever wear a helmet and he made it himself. The thing, at least in old photos, and the thing looks like it was made of foam or something.

I never heard that he made it. I know he used to paint it. When he was traded from the Kings to the Isles it went from black to blue.

Googled it. It was a Snaps helmet that his father bought him when he was 12.

"Both of them (the helmets) have taken a beating over the years," said Goring with a laugh. "They had been taped, they all had been refiberglassed at different times, restructured at different times. It is obviously a unique helmet, it has been through a lot of wars.

And I don't think they'd insult 2 of their great players by doing this to throw shade at Tavares. I think him leaving probably increased the clamor for it from fans- they really wanted 91 retired for Goring last year when the Leafs came to visit for the first time.

I can't really see another guy coming to the Isles wanting to wear 91 anyway, with how many now have improvised nameplates like "asshole", "Tavasshole", "Snake", "Liar",....
