The Isles' transformation has been nothing short of spectacular. I really what they're gonna do at the deadline.

And a great coach, who brought in his winning team.
That winning team helped turn around two goalies who struggled last year. One struggled on and off the ice.
And don't forget, they don't have beards or big, heavy numbers slowing them down. ;)
But seriously, Lou also turned Bridgeport around. They're in 2nd place, which they hadn't sniffed in like 10 years or more. It was always like 3-4 top Isles prospects and a bunch of has-beens and never-was guys. Now they've got veteran AHL guys who have won Calder Cups. Some people scoff at minor league success, but they've won at the level they're playing at. It's good to have. Guys get called up now and slot right in, expecting to keep winning. For the past 10-20 years, Isles call ups usually looked stunned by the speed of the game. Now they're ready to go.

Chicago tonight.

Shitter vs Chicago. Got a point, but looked like stir fried dog shit doing it.
Trotz said after the game that it was an unacceptable effort. Glad he's pissed and wasn't like "hey we got a point!" like Weight used to do.

If someone told me the Isles would be in Metro 1, 14 games over NHL .500, I'd have laughed for a long time. But here they are.

No game til Friday. :chris18:
Barzal gets praise from Crosby and Letang after the ASG.
Tavares said he's happy for the Isles on their season, says he still has some great friends there. Then like the asshole he is, adds that he's with the Leafs and can only focus on what he can control, which wasn't part of the question. Dude, just shut up already. Leave it at you're happy for them and you look good for a change.

The true hero of the turn around is Tavares. ;)

I agree! The addition by subtraction theory works perfectly well in this case. Lots of Isles fans were calling him Johnny ABS (Addition by Subtraction) last year. I thought they were nuts at the time, but I also thought he would certainly stay, considering all the times he said he would. But hey, thanks for leaving! Certainly not missing you. He's the one who keeps bringing up the Leafs. It's like he dumped them, but is now upset that they don't give a fuck and have moved on. That Kid is far more dynamic and Lee is a much better Captain than Johnny Robot.

Only another 36 hours until there's actual Islanders hockey to talk about. Siiiiiigh.

I wrote a bunch of shit up about what they should do at the deadline and lost it to login bullshit. 3 times! Basically- be aggressive but not stupid. This team isn't winning a Cup this year, so don't mortgage the future for rentals. Anyone being brought in needs to either focus on addressing a certain need (i.e., a PP finisher) and should come with term or be negotiated before the trade. Unless they come dirt cheap, which isn't likely.

Isles lose 1*-0 in the shootout to the Bolts in their first game back after a 9 game break. Very entertaining game. Greiss with 41 saves and Vasilevsky with 36. The lone shootout goal, by Hedman, Greiss didn't look set. He was standing there with his glove almost in front of his body, kind of hanging oddly. So Hedman ripped a wrister by him. That was it.
Kucherov is a scumbag. He was going after Leo Komarov, so Mayfield stepped in (pushing Komarov out). Then Kucherov slew footed Mayfield. In OT, Leddy beat Kucherov to the puck so Kucherov brought a crosscheck down onto the back of Leddy's neck. Leddy just crumpled to the ice. There was only 1:43 left in OT, but Leddy didn't play again. That's some stupid, dangerous shit there.

Kings tonight, which I will miss.

4-2 win vs Kings. Nice come back. 4 points ahead of the Pens & Caps. 10 points up on 9th place. 66 points in 51 games.
Barzal talked about learning just how driven all the All Stars are. Said he's in the same category, but learned a bit from them about approach.
Ladd & Hickey are practicing in non-contact jerseys. Trotz threw out mandatory quote #8, saying getting them back is like a trade acquisition that doesn't cost anything. He added that he & Lou have met a few times lately and are keeping everything in mind when looking into trades- long & short term impacts, chemistry, etc. I don't expect a big move. I almost feel like they're more concentrated on getting Lee & Lehner to re-sign.
Isles are 16-4-1 in their last 21, which is the best run the team has had in 29 years according to their stats guy.

In Boston on Tuesday, NJ on Thursday. Home for matinees against the Avs on Saturday & Wild on Sunday.

And the league agreed with me about Kucherov- $5k fine for the slew foot on Mayfield, with mention of the crosscheck on Leddy. A fine doesn't matter to these guys, but it's something.

Isles rolling in their last 10. Atop the Patrick with a bit of space and their goal diff shows it's no fluke.

Hoping for a NYI-PIT playoff rematch like 93.

If it has the same outcome, hell yeah. That would be fun.

Isles played a terrible game vs the Bruins. Their best play by far was a great rush by Toews that lead to a Clutterbuck go-ahead goal that was taken away after a 5 minute review that showed he was millimeters offsides. Later two Bruins players got called during the same play and the refs gave both penalties to one guy. It turned what should have been a 2 minute 5 on 3 into a 4 minute 5 on 4. And during that the Bruins had a player jump onto the ice when his changing player was not still in the center circle, and the extra player hit an Islander player. Refs were just terrible all game long. Almost as bad as Bailey and Beauvillier. Fucking save Barzal and change his wingers. Those 2 have sucked donkey for a while now. But Ho-Sang was benched in the AHL for not playing the right way, so all is good. Don't worry about Bailey giving the puck away twice with the goalie pulled or Beauvillier staring at fallen players while Bergeron puts in the Bruins first goal.

Off to NJ.

Isles overcome giving up some flukey goals to the Avs by... scoring a flukey goal (Eberle).
Pulock with 2, including the OT winner. Both Ovi style 1-timers from the edge of the circle. Great shots. He's finally found his aim again.

After the game interviewers asked Lee & Eberle how they feel about the team, as this is apparently the 5th win in a row in which they trailed 2-0 (seems odd to me). They both said they're a TEAM, not a 1-line team. Eberle took it a little farther, saying they don't have one big superstar, so they all work hard and together. Was that a shot at someone who left?

Wild Sunday at 3.

Isles entering the Panarin sweepstakes, either now or the offseason. Bob might come along too if Lehner bounces.

Panarin- yes!
Bob- no.
Lehner seems to really like LI. I'm hoping he stays.

Isles beat the Wild 2-1. Beauvillier had his best game in a year or so. Being dropped from first to third line had the intended effect. He's alive again. 7 SOG, one went in. Filppula continues to impress me. He's slowing down obviously, but he is quite a smart player. Greiss with another good game.

3-1 loss to the Sabres. Didn't look good for most of the game. Trotz said they got caught up trying to play an east/west game when they really play north/south. "Too cute" was another quote.

It's kind of funny to see Isles fans freaking out over a regular season loss. They are starting to sound entitled to winning every game, like Yankee fans.

Clumbus on Thursday. Should be interesting. The race is tight.

3-0 win vs Clumbus. Cizikas with 2 goals (14 & 15). He may hit 20 on the season. Proof that Snow is an idiot for having let Martin go. Cizikas, Martin and Clutterbuck really are the best 4th line.

25 games to go.

Poorly played, but nice score vs the Oilers. 5-2 win. Lee with a goal and a fight. I was hoping he'd assist on an empty netter for the Gordie. Oh well.

Butch Goring calls guys wrong names all the time. It's part of his charm. Last night he referred to Connor McDonald and Leon Dry Cycle. Have another Butch! He also asked Brendan Burke "are they chanting we're number 1?", while fans were chanting "Rangers suck". Burke replied "uhh, no, that's something else." Never change Butch.

Isles with a few days off.

I've missed some games.
Loss to Flames.
OT loss to Oilers, in which McDavid got a 2 game suspension for hitting Leddy in the head. McDavid also got the OT winner.
4-0 win vs the Canucks.

Lou's big move so far? Signing Dennis "old balls" Seidenberg to a 1 year $700k deal. Depth insurance for the playoffs, but really?
Also signed AHL goalie Jeremy Smith to a 2 year/2-way deal.
Most of the Isles supposed targets have already been moved. Sticking with a team that has already far exceeded expectations wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.
