Scott Mayfield signed a 5 year extension, worth $1.45 million/year. Great deal for the Isles. He's a big kid who has been showing improvements every game. He's tougher than any of their other d-men, and seems to really like NY. He's probably a 5-6 d-man tops, but he doesn't hurt them. His skating and puck handling have improved.

On the one hand, a competent 5-6D at 1.5M is a solid deal, but what's the point of locking up a low-ceiling player like that? I feel like it wouldn't take much for Mayfield to get hurt or lose a step and become useless.

Doesn't seem like a huge risk, but I'll say that the strategy of locking up lower-tier players to cap-friendly deals can backfire big time, depending on how many get done. The Avs under Greg "From Accounting" Sherman did that all the time and ran into cap trouble TWICE with little more than two abortive 1st round playoff exits to show for it.

Agreed. It'll be either very smart or really dumb. No in between. Maybe JT likes Mayfield?

Oh great, maybe he's the Pens' version of Marc Bergevin when Mario was around.

But Bergevin was "good in the room". Not sure about Mayfield.
