Tavares on playing some games at the old Coliseum next year:
Quote:
"If that’s the case, the place means a lot to the organization and the fan base. Whatever it is, I know people will be excited,’’ he said. "It’s obviously another step in the transition from Barclays and the evolution of going to Belmont.

"The Coliseum is a special place. We had an exhibition game there this year and it brought back a lot of great memories. For me, it’s where I started my career, it’s where so many great things have happened. I really haven’t thought about it a whole lot. But I’ve always said the team belongs on Long Island. It’s where the team was born, created its identity . . . If that’s the case, it’s going to be a great opportunity, a great experience to go back there and to relive — and create some more — great history."

The idea of playing part of a season in Uniondale and part at Barclays Center in Brooklyn also did not seem daunting to him. "The two-building thing . . . I know the organization will make it as easy as possible for us as players to go out there and do our job," he said. "Both places are places we’re familiar with."

That's from a comment on LightHouseHockey.com.
Sounds optimistic. And there are more rumors surrounding tomorrow's deadline, that the Isles will in fact play about 12 games at the Coliseum. Yay!

Press conference this morning, including Isles owners, Gov Cuomo, and players (yes, Tavares). Turns out they'll play roughly HALF of their games over the next 3 seasons at the Coliseum! I'll bet the games at Barclays are going to be close to empty and the Coliseum games will be sold out or close to it.

Brett Yormark, who runs both Barclays & the Coliseum, said they are going to make renovations to the locker rooms and such, to make them more modern.

Good news. Tavares liked playing there, and lives close by. Good news, indeed!

How many people fit in the Coliseum at this point?

~12,000. That's why they can't move back there permanently. All stories about the "renovations" say they basically just put a facade on the outside and bright paneling on the inside. They didn't do anything to increase the size of the concourse inside the building, which was one of the biggest complaints all along. It would not be approved today at the size it is. It would be considered a fire hazard. But to enlarge it they'd either have to cut into seating, or expand the building outwards, which would mean removing the outer walls, which would obviously be a massive undertaking. I thought they could do something like put a new outer ring around the outside of the building and enclose it, and essentially make it like a 2nd concourse, and remove sections of the existing outer wall, thus allowing more flow between the old and new concourses, but a similar plan was shot down. Not sure why, although cost may have been the killer.

But the story is 12 games next year at the Coliseum, and 20 or 21 in each of the following seasons. Hey, they aren't getting more than 12k in Barclays on too many nights, so why not go back to the old joint?

Barclays guy Brett Yormark made a snide comment the other day that he wishes the Isles the best of luck IF Belmont gets built. From Lighthousehockey.com- Public hearings are planned March 22 for input on the Islanders and partners’ Belmont redevelopment. Included is a “250-room hotel [that] would stand 265 feet, or about 24 stories, providing views of the racetrack” and also...OH GOD luxury outlet stores. [Baumbach & Brodsky Beat at Newsday]

Sounding more and more like Wang's old Lighthouse project that was killed due to traffic and impacts to local businesses.

Belmont arena is supposedly on schedule, despite locals complaining about the increased traffic they expect.

Apparently 19 protestors showed up the other day. 19. That's not going to stop the project, unless one of them happens to be a billionaire or something.

And now that sports gambling is going to be more mainstream, the Belmont racing folks are planning to upgrade their facility as well. So now the whole area may get some real money influx and infrastructure upgrades. Good or bad, it's all likely to happen.

Lots of rumors swirling that the Isles are going to move back to the Coliseum next year, full time, until Belmont is built.

Funnily enough, the Habs play-by-play guy slipped the other day on air and said "I'm glad this is the last game we're ever doing in Brooklyn. Next season we'll be back at the Coliseum."

 Everyone hates it there. They've pissed off a lot of old LI fans. They've gotten like a dozen new fans in Brooklyn. The ice sucks so players hate it. The list goes on. But I wonder if the broadcast booths suck for some reason too.
I hoped Brooklyn would work out well for them. It certainly hasn't. I just wish I could remember wtf they call the Coliseum now. NYCB Live or some stupid shit like that?

Isles announce playoff "home". It was originally said that it would be one building or the other, so I assumed Brooklyn, since Barclays holds a few thousand more people, even with its obstructed view seats and horse shoe shape. But yesterday they announced that IF they make the playoffs the first round will be at the Coliseum, and any further rounds would be in Brooklyn. Main reason for the switch? They know the fans want games at the Coliseum so they are giving it to them. But there is more money to be made in Brooklyn, and they say the Coliseum infrastructure can't handle national media without massive upgrades. But mainly it's the money.
Players have said the Coliseum is easier for them, but say they'll be ready to play anywhere.

They should do them all at the Coliseum if they were to win that first round. Where they belong. That would be dope.

Isles beat the Oilers 5-2 (en) but the game was much closer than that. Lehner was really good again. Lee and Nurse fought. Then Lee scored a bit later on. His first goal in 12 games.
76 points in 58 games. 5 point lead on the Caps. 9 point lead on the Pens who are holding onto WC2 by a hair.
Butch Goring with some classic Butch moments. Talked about Conor McDonald and Leon Dry Cycle. Never change Butch.

Belmont is happening. The Final EIS is done and ready to go out for public comment (15 days). There going to be a new train station added about 1/2 mile away. The last train station added was 44 years ago. So yeah, that's a big deal. Fans flipped their lids about the 1/2 mile walk idea, and then a bunch of people pointed out that the walk from the far sections of old Coliseum parking lot were, you guessed it, 1/2 mile from the arena.
Of course not everyone is happy. Lots of NIMBY folks raising a stink. One guy said it's going to be like the Belmont Stakes every night. That race draws 70-100k people. Isles fans had a good laugh at that, asking if there are even 70k of us. Someone else brought out the obligatory "what about the children?" nonsense, asking how children will be protected from the adult tailgating activities. There's going to be an 8' tall hedge all around the property, and well, how about you parent your own child, instead of spending all day on Twitter complaining about how nobody else watches out for your kids. Fucking shocking idea, huh? But supposedly tailgating will be banned. No idea if they're just saying that to quiet these folks and will allow it later, or if they'll have the rule but not enforce it, or if they'll really ticket people drinking a beer in the parking lot.

The artist rendering of the new arena's outside looks like either a train station or baseball stadium, depending on who you ask. Lots of brick and tall windows. Looks like Camden Yards.

But hey, the Isles will have 1 and only 1 home in the fairly near future! And it's not in Quebec, Seattle or KC!

The initial designs look fantastic. I often think arenas look ugly as hell on the outside, even the more modern ones. Glad they're taking a ballpark-like approach to the external design.

Glad this is finally happening. I still say they should play the odd game in Nassau from time to time just for fun.

The next 2 years are half there, half at Barclays. I think the same playoff line will continue too. Which really sucks.

The new arena got the final approval necessary. There are supposedly excavators on-site, set to begin work tomorrow. Official ceremony early in September. He may have been unorthodox and quirky, but Isles fans owe Wang a lot of thanks for keeping the team local and finding the right buyers. Shame he's not alive to see this all coming to fruition.

All too predictably- the Belmont project is being sued to halt work. The neighboring village is saying that there were plans drawn up before the RFP went out, which indicates the process was predetermined, and they want the environmental review reopened, as they feel it was not open long enough. Nothing shocking. But it will waste time and money.

The Isles are giving commemorative soil samples to season ticket holders from the Belmont excavation. I think it's just a way to reduce the amount of soil they have to truck off-site.

Belmont footings and framing already going in! This thing is happening!

Old Isles news- Ledecky and Malkin are doing a great job bringing old alumni back. Saturday is an alumni game. Listening to Mick Vukota on a radio interview talking about it. Says L&M have invited anyone who played for the Isles, even guys who literally played 1 game, are all invited for a full weekend of events. Games, reunions, etc. He also talks about how after Dale Hunter cheap shotted Turgeon in the 93 series, Vukota and Rich Pilon had a plan where Pilon would cause a distraction, yelling at the Caps players as they walked by, and Vukota hid in the Caps' stick room and would jump Hunter to beat the living shit out of him. Turns out the Caps had a feeling something might happen and had Hunter sneak out another way. It would be one amazing piece of hockey history if Hunter had gone into that room. Al Arbour lit into Vukota and Pilon when he heard about the plan.

Vukota also talks about the 94 brawl against the Rangers after LaFontaine had been concussed. Vukota had fought Jeff Bloomberg, who Ranger fans vilify him for fighting since they knew Bloomberg didn't fight. Vukota said he had no idea that Bloomberg was "known" for not fighting and was a Born Again Christian. Jokes that the team bios just say a guy is 6'3", 215, not what religion they are or whether they fight or not.
