This whole prolonged shit show is a head scratcher. Oh geez...I didn't see that some Russian lord is closing the colliseum. Damn that blatant East coast corporate corruption.

It's a real saga. Prokhorov owns the Nets, Barclays Center and after the Isles moved to Barclays, bought the Coliseum. That seemed a good thing at first, especially when they "renovated" the building (which was basically spray painting a turd gold- it was just adding a facade). The Coliseum was mainly to be used for concerts and shit at first, but now, the Isles will play out their last pre-Belmont year there, which is awesome.
I was excited for Barclays. I went there once. Once.... Took over 3 hours each way due to traffic. Sucked dog ass. I can get to the Coliseum in less than half that time. Belmont should be around 75-90 minutes.

Roof is almost done at Belmont. Supposedly on target for opening the 2021-2022 season.

49 of 56 suites have already sold out, and they haven't officially gone on sale yet. People (read, "companies") are offering to pre-buy.

Bettman toured the new arena yesterday and while walking through the visiting locker room said "I'm surprised Lou let you make it so big".

All available season tickets at Belmont are sold out. Nothing like consecutive deep playoff runs to sell out the new arena! :toot:

The concerned citizens of Elmont have gotten their way on a few things. UBS Arena's parking lot is not allowed to have tailgating, which was a HUGE thing for Isles fans at the Coliseum, and one of the reasons they hated Barclays so much. Along with tailgating, beeping the "Let's go Islanders" tune was popular, and is also banned. All beeping, not just the tune. Neighbors were very concerned about the noise.

Isles fans are PISSED about these rules.

No word if conceiving a child in the parking lot, or the resulting bragging about same, will be allowed.

Building still isn't ready to open. Ledecky says he's very proud of the accomplishment that the arena is, but says they're going 24/7 until the home opener to have it done. I have a feeling fans will be forbidden from touching walls due to paint drying.

They will have a chair of honor that will remain empty at all times, in honor of POWs.

Some cool tidbits about UBS Arena, in no particular order.

Barzal says it's a high end facility, beautiful and they're a lucky group to be playing there.

Ross Johnston and Oliver Wahlstrom played paper-rock-scissors to see who would be the first Islander to get onto the UBS ice ever. Wahlstrom won 2/3 and got to be first. Wahlstrom won the deciding round with rock, to Johnston's scissors. I can't believe that Johnston doesn't always choose rock.

Call up Robin Salo will get an incredibly cool rookie lap! I'm sure other players have gotten a rookie lap to open a building, but it can't exactly be common.

Trotz said the arena is top notch in every way, and "puts a pep in your step". Good! They need that.

Like all teams, the Isles have out of town "meetup groups" that meet to watch their favorite team's games in whatever city they're located in. Unlike any other team, the Isles have dedicated an area of facade inside the new arena to showing the logos/names of these meetup groups. Very cool nod to out of town fans! Some have already cynically said that it's not a big deal for the team to put that up. Bullshit. They paid to have the signs printed and put up, and could have sold that space to advertisers. Plus, what team thinks to do that? Ledecky has said he knows how important out of market fans are to the Isles. So he paid them some honor in the new place. I love it.

There are signs in the parking lot that say no tailgating and no honking. Predictably, fans are already planning huge group photos with these signs, while they tailgate and honk...

Players were checking out everything at the new place, including Wahlstrom and Martin being photographed checking out the penalty boxes.

One day to go. They're still working on fine details. Ledecky said they'll be ready for the game, but said there will be kinks to be worked out. Fans are being told to arrive really early so the parking doesn't make people late. What was that about not tailgating? Arrive early! But don't tailgate. Yeah. Sure. For a fan base that has loved tailgating games for almost 50 years and that was one of the big reasons they hated their "new home" in Brooklyn...

Isles open UBS vs the Flames, who were their first opponents at Nassau Coliseum when both teams were new expansion franchises in 1972. Nice job NHL. That's pretty cool. At least you got ONE game right on the schedule.

Bailey, Lee and Johnston all out with covid. Some are saying Isles opener is in jeopardy.

Yet at the ribbon cutting ceremony today, photos show tons of people packed in, only about 5% with masks on.

Lou said the Isles players, coaches, and other staff are all going with masks all the time for now. Increased testing for everyone. Yeesh.

2 more fun facts about the arena-
Blue Line Bagels & Deli is an Isles fan owned deli that has done a ton of work getting food to first responders during the pandemic. They've got a satellite store in the arena.

Offside Tavern was an Isles bar that had been in Manhattan (rough place for it!) that closed during the pandemic due to nobody being in NYC. They're opening a bar in the arena as their only location, and from what I hear, Ledecky reached out to the owner when he heard the Manhattan location was closed, and said they were looking for a bar and wanted Offside since they'd been loyal fans. If true, that's awesome. They have some Isles-themed food names, like Tater Trotz.

Even I’m excited about this rink opening. This has been a looooooong time coming.

A shame Charles Wang didn’t live to see it.

Agreed. I'm glad to see how many articles about the opening mention him keeping the team here. He may have had some bat shit crazy ideas about how to run the team, hired some real idiots, etc., but he cared about keeping them local and when he finally gave up trying it himself, he sold to people who were committed to the same idea of keeping them here.

Ledecky has done a bunch of interviews in which he's said he's spoken to well over 5000 Isles fans, asking what they want to see in the building. One aspect I find really cool is them keeping the ceiling low like the Coliseum, and they had sound architects help in the design. They want to be able to use the arena for music on off nights, but they also wanted it to be LOUD since so many fans have mentioned loving the high volume of playoff games, and opposing players have said the Coliseum was an intimidating place to play when it was loud. So, hopefully this works!

Opening day! Very exciting, even if a few big names will miss the game. Let's go Isles! :viking:

In "what the fuck?" Isles news, Lou is telling the Offside Tavern, a privately run bar in UBS Arena, that they need to change their menu item names. He doesn't want them naming drinks after players. He wants TEAM THEMED names if anything. So this small bar, that went out of business during the pandemic, and is back but has only had TWO nights to sell items, is now supposed to re-do their menus (a huge cost to a restaurant) because in the middle of a 6 game losing streak and a covid outbreak, the team's GM wandered in and was upset to see individuals singled out. They have drinks like the Josh Ho-Tang, which I believe is vodka and orange juice. But Lou can't handle that. I normally appreciate his rules, but this is seriously overstepping his boundaries, and at the worst time possible. If the Isles will pay for replacing all their menus and signage, that's one thing. But if not, Lou should go find a park bench to sit on and feed ducks. That's just bullshit.

I guess that's the tradeoff with having Lou Lamoriello as your GM. In addition to being a brilliant hockey mind, he's also an egomaniacal control freak.

I read on twitter that because Offside is within UBS and Lou is Pres, not just GM, that he DOES in fact have a say. It's in the lease agreement. No idea if that's true or not, but it's what people who claim to know the situation are saying.

What a difference a legit building can make.
https://twitter.com/PuckReportNHL/status/1484301147498332160/photo/1

Isles 5th in league attendance at 100%. I'm sure 2 trips to the conference finals didn't hurt, but they didn't even have that capacity at the Coliseum or Barclays.

Side note- how does Vegas have 104% attendance? Do escorts count twice since they're probably replacing a wife?
