Isles with the 1-0 OT win over the Flyers, who outplayed them for most of the game. Leddy tried to go cross-crease to Eberle and one of the Flyers' D tipped it by Elliott, who had been really good in the game. Not sure why, but Elliott has a record of 9-2-9 against the Isles. Funny how some players just play really well against certain teams. On the other end, Sorokin made 30 saves to keep the shutout. He was awesome and really stole this one for them. Coburn made his Isles debut and played on the Old Balls line with Greene, but somehow, it worked. Coburn made a few nice plays to breakup Flyers rushes.

After the game Trotz was asked something about Leo not being great for fantasy hockey. Trotz replied "I know he's not, but we're not playing fantasy hockey."

Isles hop the Pens. 1-4 are only separated by 6 points now, with the Bruins having 2 games in hand on most of the teams. Rangers are in 5th, only 4 behind the Bruins. Top 5 could go any way. Isles next 6 games make it much more interesting- Rangers, Caps x3, Rangers x2.

Isles with a good statement game, 6-1 win over the Rangers. Beauvillier with 1g and 3a. Bailey with 2 g. Fun game.

Trouba knocked Martin down with a hard hit early on. Seemed a mistake. Martin nailed him like 30 seconds later and the boards didn't give at all. Trouba couldn't get up first time he tried, struggled the 2nd time, and had to be held up by the ref while the trainer came over. Looked like his nose was bleeding. He didn't return. Hope he's okay.

Boston won and Pens nearly shit the bed, blowing a 6-1 lead to beat the Devils 7-6. So everyone who played kept pace.

Isles and Caps tied for first (Caps have the lead with 3 more regulation wins, then again with 2 more ROW), but it makes for an interesting last MLB-like 3 game series. Two at home, then the third on the road for the Isles. Pens are nipping at their heels, a mere 1 point behind them both. All have 10 games left.

1-0 SO loss to the Caps. Very entertaining game, but the officiating was terrible. Chara hooked Barzal up high and just yanked him down, no call. Barzal flattened in front of the net with a crosscheck, no call. Barzal on a partial breakaway and hauled down, no call. Barzal's stick lifted into Chara's face by another Cap player, no call by the close ref, who told an angry what happened, but it was called by the ref 85' away. There was a bunch of other Isles knocked to the ice all night with no penalties to the Caps. Barzal really needs to just stfu and play. He keeps asking why there wasn't a call to the point that he complains as much as Crosby is accused of. Refs probably hate him and he's never going to get these calls if he keeps bitching. He had a chance to win it late in the game but got a bit hooked from behind, fell slowly/awkwardly and shot a rolling puck over the crossbar. Would have been great if he scored.

Varlamov with some great saves and Clutterbuck did a great job on Ovi on the PK. Beauvillier with a nice SO goal. Barzal was stopped and Nelson shot wide from in close. Again, a rolling puck. Lousy Smarch weather.

Pens won, Rangers lost. So the Isles netted 3 points toward their "magic number" but got dropped to 3rd in the standings. 1 point behind the Caps, tied with the Pens in points but 3 ROW behind them.

Caps again tomorrow. And again 2 days later.

Vrana scored 4 for Detroit. Washington could've used those goals

The Rangers are done now, no?

Not sure who the Isles would prefer facing in the opening round. They all seem even and Boston always performs well in the playoffs. Tough choice.

The Rangers have slight chance of making the playoffs. I wouldn't bet on it, but with my luck if I said they were out entirely they'd win-out and make it at the Isles' expense. But if they do win-out, they'd top at 70 points. Everyone else already has 60-64, and the the Bruins at 60 have 2 games in hand on them. Everyone else has 47. So will 3 teams get 7-8 points in their last 9 games? Most likely.

As for preferring to face anyone, I try not to choose. I think anyone will be tough. They're all so good and after this year, know each other so well. Isles walked through the Caps last year in the playoffs. I definitely wouldn't expect that again. Pens seem to have once again found a great young goalie, as have the Bruins to go along with Rask. So everyone is tough. It'll be a dog fight to get out of the East.

And the Isles can't say anything about goals from other teams/games. They'd gladly trade just 1 of their goals from the 6-1 win over the Rangers to use to win the Caps game.

Damn Rangers won last night, so they "could" still reach 70 points. But the Sabres beat the Bruins, which is great.

Isles-Caps again tonight. Pens play the Devils for the hundredth time this week in the only other Audubon Bird Book East game. I just realized that changing the sponsor of each division each time we mention it has us all sounding like Wesley Willis, which is a great thing!

Rock over London. Rock on Chicago.
The Trojan Condoms East Division. Ribbed for her pleasure.

6-3 caps win. Sorokin was awful. At least 3 shitty goals against. Third place, being nipped at by the Bruins, who have a game in hand. Fuck a goat. I don't see why you'd go to Sorokin after Varlamov had a shutout 2 days earlier, unless Trotz just didn't want to start Sorokin in Washington. As if crowds are really big and intimidating right now? So instead the kid shit the bed at home.

All day yesterday I thought the game was last night. Such a bummer to turn on the TV and see that it's tonight instead. But then again, I may have put the pain of another defeat off for a day. Fucking caps again. Trotz said they had too many passengers in the last game. Uhh, yeah! It's not like these games are big or anything... How the fuck do pro players not show up for a game with major playoff implications?

Anyway. Assuming Varlamov is in net tonight after Sorokin's shit show the other night.

Varlamov's birthday was yesterday (33) and everyone expected him to start. He didn't take warmups and all of a sudden, Sorokin, who got shelled on Saturday, was in net with Schneider as backup. Isles haven't released the reason, but with how big this game was I certainly don't think it was him getting his birthday off.

Sorokin allowed a goal on the caps' first shot, 1:29 into the game and it had the feeling of another shelling. Kind of refreshing that the final was 1-0, but the Isles still shit the bed in the offensive zone, generating almost no offense. They nicely killed off close to 2 minutes of 5 on 3, but for the 3rd time this year, failed to take advantage of Ovi being out of the caps' lineup. The caps, Pens and Bruins all won, so the Bruins are now just 1 point behind the Isles with a game in hand. And the Rangers are only 5 points back, with one more game played, but the 2 face each other twice Thurs and Sat. To say the Isles NEED those games is an understatement. They look like they have zero confidence right now. Trotz threw the top 3 lines into the blender and the results looked like shit. His refusal to put Barzal and Beauvillier together is mind boggling. I know Trotz has forgotten more about hockey than I'll ever know, but those two guys are best friends off the ice and whenever they're together they score or at least create good chances off the rush. Beauvillier is one of the few players who can keep up with Barzal, so they get a lot of odd man rushes when together. Eberle has average speed and everyone else they put on LW1 is slow, so Barzal has to enter the zone, look to his right and if Eberle isn't there or is covered, Barzal has to circle around the left side, which every team knows he's going to do. Earlier in the year he was driving to the net and scoring, but he's backed away from that again, so they're creating no offense. Last night he tried once to drive the middle, ran into two caps defenders and was shown a seat pretty hard.

Scary moment in the first period when Martin chased Raffl into the caps' end and hit him from behind. Raffl had faked like he was going to come out with his left shoulder to Martin so Martin him him hard, but Raffl turned his back to Martin at the last second, so Martin boarded him (which definitely should have been called a 5 minute major), Raffl looked like he hit his face on the dasher, collapsed and Martin stooped to see if Raffl was okay, ignoring the play. Chara came in, saw Raffl laying there and told Martin they were fighting. Chara got in a few really good ones early and then Martin got a few okay ones in as the linesmen broke it up. In the box you could see Chara yelling at Martin and read Martin's lips replying "I tried to! He turned!" They kept talking and it seemed to get more civil. Martin hits like a truck, but he has been very clean about it for years now. Raffl returned and played fine. I thought he had a concussion or broken jaw from the way he went down at first. Glad he's okay.

Rangers for 2 coming up. Gotta win these.

Lou reportedly had a trade in place for Taylor Hall and opted instead for Palmieri/Zajac. So far that sure is looking like an epic screw-up on his part.

Hall was making it sound like he orchestrated the Boston deal all along. Real humble guy.

The rumor on Isles sites is that Lou & the Sabres had the deal all set but Hall really wanted to go to Boston instead, so he more or less said he wouldn't waive his NTC to go to the Isles, so Lou moved on to Palmieri/Zajac and then Hall got what he wanted, so he's a happy camper and his play is showing it.

Zajac should just be depth for the Isles, like Kuhnackl was last year. He should NOT be on Barzal's line. And Uncle Leo shouldn't be either. I still don't get Trotz's reluctance to put Barzal and Beauvillier together.

Rangers tonight. If the Isles lose both these games to the Rangers in regulation, the Rangers will be one fucking point behind the Isles. That's some scary shit. And Varlamov is out because he's "sore". Motherfucker, you're a #1 goalie and it's the stretch. Dunk your junk in some epsom salts and get the fuck out there!

Isles get a HUGE 4-0 win over the Rangers. Didn't quite put the nail in the Rangers' coffin, but it's pretty darn close. Rangers are 6 points behind Boston, who have 2 games in hand.

caps- 50 GP 69 pts
Pens- 51 GP 69 pts
Isles- 50 GP 65 pts
Bruins- 49 GP 64 pts

Rangers- 51 GP 58 pts

Flyers officially eliminated last night.

Isles and Rangers again Saturday. Isles need to be very careful. Barzal hit Lindgren from behind and Lindgren left the game. Barzal served 2 minutes, and as luck would have it, stepped onto the ice to receive a pass and scored on the empty net. Rangers had pulled Shesterkin with 7:00 to go, down 3 with a PP. Good idea, but the Isles killed it and then got the 4-0 goal. Barzal of all people. When he'd hit Lindgren it touched off not quite a line brawl, but a line scrum. Barzal got the only penalty. I don't think anyone thinks of Barzal as a dirty player, but especially if they look to be eliminating the Rangers' playoff hopes on Saturday, Barzal had really better watch himself.

Early in the game, Uncle Leo got his first goal in well over a year. Known more for being funny than good at hockey, he took the imaginary monkey off his back as his celebration. It was a really nice goal. He one timed a perfect pass from Eberle. Beauvillier and Wahlstrom also scored. Good to see Wahlstrom get one. And Varlamov started and was perfect. Just what they needed. His league leading 6th shutout of the year.

I missed the entire game Saturday night, but apparently the Isles dominated the Rangers, with hey looky there, Beauvillier on Barzal's line! Who's been saying that for a while? Oh yeah, ME! Beauvillier with 2 goals, Barzal with 1. Almost like they work well together.

That clinched a playoff spot for the Isles and all but officially put a nail in the Rangers' coffin. They'd need to win out and the Bruins to lose out for the Rangers to make the playoffs. Slim chance of either of those, let alone both.

So the Isles are in 3rd, 2 points behind the Caps, 4 behind the Pens (who have played 1 more game), 1 ahead of the Bruins who have a game in hand. So positioning is still very much up in the air, especially with the Isles playing the Bruins for their last game. Bruins have another game after that vs the Caps though. Games in the west go for another week or so after the east is done with the regular season. Wonder how the league will handle that. Start the east's playoff games and space them out? Give them a full week off to rest/heal/practice? No great answer.

Isles are at the Sabres for 2 games, then home for the Devils for 2, then in Boston for their last regular season game.

The Coliseum lives to host at least one more playoff round! Hopefully 4.

Well that was a shit show! Isles lose 4-2 (en) to the Sabres, who had their 5th string goalie in net. 28 year old career minor leaguer who hadn't played a game in 14 months. The 2 goals that counted for the Isles were redirections. They had another goal but it was taken back on a goalie interference challenge. Cizikas had been in the crease prior to the shot but was then pushed toward the goalie. He bumped the goalie for sure, but he was up on one skate when he did, trying to keep from falling over (which would have been into the goalie). Originally called a good goal, then taken away on the challenge. Either way, the Isles blew a 2-0 lead to the worst team in the league and got dropped to 4th place, as the Bruins leap frogged them. All 4 playoff spots in the WhateverTheFuck East, other than positions. Isles may have royally fucked themselves out of home ice with this loss. Or any other loss, but this one feels particularly damaging. It seemed like they thought they were going to win simply by stepping on the ice. They didn't have their usual jump/urgency.

They're back at it again tonight. Wonder if the same ECHL goalie will play the back to back for the Sabres.

Isles shit the bed again against the Sabres, blowing a 3-2 third period lead to lose in the SO, going 0-3 vs an ECHL goalie in the SO. Don't get me wrong, the dude is a great story and I am happy for him. I just wish it was vs the Bruins, caps or Pens. Still, if you told me the Isles would take 13/16 points from the Sabres before the season I'd take it for sure. It just sucks to take 12/12 earlier in the season, then slip to 4th place in the last week of the season while taking 1/4 vs the Sabres.

After the game 2 nights ago Trotz said the Isles looked arrogant vs the Sabres. I said they thought they were going to win by stepping on the ice. Guess he felt the same. Barzal was terrible in that game, including standing in front of the guy who tipped in the winning goal. So Trotz made him a healthy scratch for last night. That's a pretty big move. Hopefully it sends a strong message. Said he was also very unhappy with the D in that game, but couldn't scratch all 6.

Time to take it out on the Devils.

Totally not Isles-related, but it is a New York question.

Which town is "better," Binghamton or Utica? Just curious with the announcement that the Canucks are pulling out of Utica and apparently the Devils are going to take over there and bail on Bingo.

Chris would know better the dregs of middle rust belt New York than I, but Bingo was hella depressing the one night I spent there. The few people I did speak to insisted I return to my hotel and stay there, because it wasn't safe out.
