We're surprised it was him? The guy who gave out the Kovalchuk deal? That lost Parise to a long term deal? That first found his way out of bad contracts the last go around through LTIR and trades?
I still see the Kovalchuk deal as Lou's way of bringing backdiving contracts to the forefront of everyone's mind as a problem. I think he purposely wrote it to be such obvious cap circumvention that it wouldn't pass, and would bring about reform. It did.
But the Devils Cup teams were built on a core of guys who quietly went about their business and didn't make a fuss about anything. I guess if Zajac fits the bill then it makes sense Lou would lock him up long term.
