Yeah, not surprising actually. Lou's been kinda crazy since the cap was implemented.

I still see the Kovalchuk deal as Lou's way of bringing backdiving contracts to the forefront of everyone's mind as a problem. I think he purposely wrote it to be such obvious cap circumvention that it wouldn't pass, and would bring about reform. It did.

But the Devils Cup teams were built on a core of guys who quietly went about their business and didn't make a fuss about anything. I guess if Zajac fits the bill then it makes sense Lou would lock him up long term.

Not to mention that his Elias contract in 06-07 was one of the very first, if not the first, to clearly tack on extra years at the end of the deal to get the cap hit down.
