The Devils have a TON of questions entering the offseason, as this is a team who might be entering next season without their two best players and franchise cornerstones. Both Parise and Brodeur could be gone, and the Devils owe a ton of money to the tune of $77 million or so.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=398296

That said, the Devils opted not to forfeit their first rounder this year as punishment for the Kovalchuk signing, to which I have to say...why? NJ stands a very good chance of not making the playoffs next year should Parise and Marty not return. And I don't think even if they do re-sign those players there's no guarantee this ragtag squad will be able to battle back into the Finals. I don't see the logic in giving up what is almost assuredly going to be a higher pick in 2013 or 2014 in order to keep number freakin' 29 this season. I guess Lou supposes with more time he could put together a prospect/player package and get back into the first round.

One thing's for sure, if Steve Bernier's NHL career is over, what a shitty way to end things.

Totally agreed on the draft pick point. Since the NHL revamped its system to bump final four teams down to the last four spots of the first round, NJ effectively did itself a favor and made the choice easy. Then proceeded to make the wrong choice.

Re: Bernier -- the poor guy took some strides to rejuvenate his career this year. If the rest of his time in the NHL is really going to be tied inextricably to one mistimed play that happens scores of times throughout the season on all teams, then NHL GMs are dumb.

That's a pretty typical play by him. He's quite a dumb hockey player and he's really just a 4th line scrub who can really hurt your team with penalties. He's entirely replaceable.

It wouldn't be NHL GMs that were dumb if he didn't get another guaranteed job again.

Parise told press "No way" to the rumo(u)rs of him signing with the Rangers. I think he'll stay a Devil.

All signs point to Minny for Parise. Lou's charisma will have to work overtime here.

If Lou somehow manages to pull off this signing I'll never doubt the man again. But I don't see how he keeps the kid on a team whose ownership owes $70-million-plus and their recent playoff run garnered something like $26 million.

Oh, and there's the whole thing concerning re-signing Martin Brodeur. He seems to be indicating very strongly he'll be back, and left it wide open as to whether he'll be a Devil or with some other squad.

Marty won't go anywhere. He's not that good anymore anyways, Hedberg matched him this year.

Uh, you just gave a good reason to re-up Parise. They made $26m this spring because they had him and Kovy up front.

I'm not saying they shouldn't, but how in hell can they afford to!?

If they can go deep in the playoffs with these guys the debts will be repaid!

How can they afford to NOT re-sign Parise? Or at least make a hell of an effort.

Holy crap, talk about a desolate forum. There's still a Tommyboy post in here!

Anyhow, Devils are getting moderate improvement so far in the scoring department, but the bottom has fallen out in terms of goals against. The main culprit appears to be Cory Schneider, who looks more like Roman Cechmanek every time a puck hits his pads. Fighting it seemingly every time. Who is the Devils goalie coach, anyway?
