With some of the names out there, I am a little surprised that Hynes was named the new coach.

When you need to squeeze that last bit of ketchup out of the bottle, you call Hynes.

He's apparently pretty close with the AGM, they go way back. I'm not sure but Poile I think also knows him.

Hynes is, by all accounts, one of the nicest guys in the NHL, so it's easy to root for him. But I just don't know if he's that good as a coach. His systems are very, very dependent on hot goalies and hot shooters. Once either of those fall back to earth, his team got pretty badly exposed.

But also, it's possible that NJ just wasn't that good a team, even when they had that stellar run where Hall won MVP. We'll see where it goes.

Fair, but even if that was the case of NJ not being a good team, there were still better coach's.

Anyway, as you mentioned, he is easy to root for.

It's unfortunate that I have to root for him to fail being an Avs fan but what can ya do?

Poile is a mixed bag to me. IMO he puts way too much of a premium on grit, and he never really found what is, IMO, the most important ingredient to a Stanley Cup winner: A franchise center.

Don't get me wrong, he built a team from scratch that nearly won the Stanley Cup a couple years ago, so it's not like the man's an idiot, but I feel like he is, in some ways, his own worst enemy.

I also did not, and still don't like, the fact that he and the organization defended noted domestic abuser Austin Watson as if he were the aggrieved party, and I also didn't care much for his handling of the Mike Ribeiro situation, though that's more endemic of the entire NHL and sports culture in general.
