Probably a year early, but...

http://www.faceoff.com/hockey/nhlnews/W ... story.html

I know we and a lot of other hockey fans give Nashville a lot of guff, but it'd be a real tragedy if they lost Weber. They've got possibly the smartest management/coaching staff in the league, but they just seem one step short (in terms of firepower at least) every single year.

Some surprisingly frank comments from the assistant GM.

If I were to venture a guess, I think he signs for 1, maybe 2 more years and then bolts as a UFA if Poile fails to add substantial pieces by then.

This might as well be "The Bad News Thread" as talks have reportedly reached a stalemate.

In other news, Francis Boullion has ceased workouts with the return of post-concussion symptoms.

Any scenario that has Nashville depending on the services of Brett Lebda is pretty much worst case.

Hearing has taken place, with Weber asking for $8.5 and the Preds countering with $4.5, which illustrates how absurd the process is.

The good news for Nashville is that he's RFA once again next summer.

8.5? I think he wants out.

I doubt that figure actually came up in negotiations. And I doubt the $4.5m Nashville is countering with did, either.

The current arbitration system is so broken it's ridiculous.

Holy crap, 7.5M for Weber.

That'll get the trade rumour mill turning again.

Honestly have to wonder where that number came from. Are they allowed to not just use RFA comparables, but adjust them for inflation? So, like, Phaneuf's contract could be used, but adjusted for 2011 $$$?

Honestly, HOW could Poile have gone in there and actually made a case without being completely disingenuous?

I hear it's not about the money, it's about the term. Weber is likely asking for a deal that takes him straight to UFA, at which point he's almost assuredly gone. Poile and Co. obviously want something a little longer.

This is ugly...neither side looks like they were prepared for this at all.

There's rumblings that teams who strike out on Suter will make an offer sheet on Weber. If so, the Preds can match, but they won't be able to trade him for a full year. Makes things rather dicey.

Well, the first shoe dropped, so if you're Poile, what do you do with Weber? He made it clear last year he didn't want to stay, and with Suter jumping to Minnesota, it's even less likely you're going to convince him to sign long-term. And of all the many noteworthy acquisitions/re-acquisitions they made before the deadline, the only one who decided to stick around is Paul Gaustad.

The Preds said before free agency started that they WILL be a cap team. Somewhat ominous words as Edmonton and Buffalo fans can attest.

Wow. Poile has a lot of work to do to keep Weber happy. But with many of the notable UFAs already tied up, does this mean Nashville will end up overpaying to get close to being a cap team? They have $30M available (I'd say Weber should tie up at least $9M of that) to sign six players...

I have no doubt they'll match any and all offers for Weber so I don't know that that's a viable acquisition strategy, other than perhaps to force Nashville to sign an one-year offer so Weber gets cut loose in 2013. After Weber, that d is pretty much strung together with glue and bits of string: Kevin Klein, Hall Gill, Ryan Ellis, Roman Josi... And the UFA pickings are pretty slim...

I don't get it; I thought Nashville was a pretty good place to play.

It is impossible to overpay Weber. The CBA doesn't allow you to spend more than 20% of the cap on a single player.

I follow some Preds bloggers on Twitter and they're asking fans of other teams what they'd give up. For a guaranteed long term signed Weber, here's what I'd offer for Montreal:

Galchenyuk or Pacioretty (one of them)
Either one more NHLer (Eller, Desharnais, Emelin likely targets)
Or two prospects (Beaulieu, Tinordi, Leblanc, Ellis, Gallagher, Collberg, etc.)
Draft Picks (to be determined, a first rounder to be expected, Habs have 3 2nd rounders in 2013)

I might ask for something to come with Weber if I feel the demands are a bit high, but probably just a middling player/2nd rounder. 4 pieces are likely.

To land a defensive core of Markov - Weber, Gorges - Subban in front of Carey freaking Price I'd do a lot.

I'd offer Edler and Ballard, 2013 2nd, and throw in Connauton for good measure. Core d would be: Garrison / Weber, Hamhuis / BXA in front of Schneider/Luongo. I need to change my shorts now.

I meant overpay other positions (not Weber, I agree you can't overpay him) to get close to the cap.

I don't think that is enough (this is assuming Weber agrees to a new contract before the trade). Edler has one year left on his contract and if he has another 50 point season will be looking at I think 6.5+ million next year. Ballard of course is over paid for his value so basically we are off loading Ballard and one year of Edler for Shea Weber. I think we have to toss in one of our Dane's at the very least.

Including Ballard in my mind could make up for the loss of Suter and give you some cost certainty for the next few years. Edler vs. Weber - both need new contracts and at least with Edler, you'd have another year to work something out.

You're probably right that it isn't enough.

Indications are pointing toward them not matching. Imagine Pekka Rinne's reaction when he realizes there's a possibility of the Preds going into the season with a top four of Gill, Klein, Ellis, and Josi? Wow.

Well there it is....a match....

That's why I don't run an NHL team......

So... Will Ed Snider play hardball in the CBA negotiations so that the players get locked out and Nashville is stuck with a $26M signing bonus to pay with no gate receipts?

If so he's of a character that makes Alan Eagleson look like a saint.

I hope the Preds do what the Avs did when they matched the NYR offer sheet on Sakic all those years ago.
