Scored his first two goals as a Hab in a thrilling comeback win against the reigning Cup champs last night. Kotkaniemi is real good.

Scored a big goal in a back and forth comeback victory against the Golden Knights and the former captain.

They're not saddling Kotkaniemi with too much (13 mins a night mostly on offence, getting beat badly on FOs), but he's showing he can hang. Seems set to eclipse Barkov's rookie season numbers, which would be a good sign because he's probably your best template to copy.

If Nathan MacKinnon proves anything, it's that you can be a center and MVP candidate while still sucking uproariously bad at faceoffs.

The faceoff thing is overstated. Kotkaniemi needs to be better than 20 percent, but can live just fine losing more than he wins. It's just a bit magnified here because the Habs as a team are pretty bad on faceoffs, and losing Plekanec won't help matters.

Then again, Habs tolerated a season of Manny Malhotra, who definitely proved faceoffs aren't the be all end all.

Kotkaniemi has 15 points in 31 games, plays between 12-16 mins a night.

In what's been a surprisingly decent but not great season for the Habs so far, Kotkaniemi has managed to stand out. His Finnish team has cratered and his dad canned as coach, so there's no going back now. Just enjoy the next six years of development and potential elite playmaking.

Surprised Matheson didn't slam him to the ice after the goal in frustration.

For whatever reason, Matheson's two games against the Habs this season were brutal. You'd think he'd be excited to play his hometown team!

Anyways, back to Kotkaniemi: he's played every game this season, and is projected to finish the season with 39-40 points, which is incredible. He's had cold streaks offensively so far, but it doesn't really affect his game. You don't see him gripping his stick tighter or looking too hard to score. His game is remarkably even day in and day out.

Three goals in his last three games. Ice-time slightly increased to about 15 mins.

Tied for third in rookie scoring behind Elias and Dahlin. Not bad for a beanpole teen centre.

Had a good season, but he's hit a wall the last few weeks. Hope he's just tired and not overmatched.

Likely hitting a wall. He's now played 76 games, his previous season, not counting international competitions, was 57, and the one before that was 17. I think he'll be fine.

Kotkaniemi goes on IR for the first time with a groin injury. He hasn't looked right so far this season and I wonder if this injury has been lingering a while. He's been wiping out in the corners a lot and just hasn't seemed very sturdy or confident on his feet. A groin injury would explain that sapped power in his legs.

He's been injured a good part of the season and has had a sophomore slump. Would a little time in the AHL actually help him get on track? I am of two minds on this.

Thoughts?

I think so, but it also speaks to how poorly things are going in Montreal right now. In Laval he can play big minutes in anonymity and get his legs back after the groin injury. Julien just can't tear himself away from Cousins, Weal and Thompson. They play a lot, and the first two are on the first powerplay wave. It's insane, and now Poehling is sucked up in this where he plays 7 minutes a night so Thompson can take big third-period faceoffs.

Is it why they keep losing at home and losing one-goal games?

I think that is a big factor, whereas they put in a big effort, but always come up one goal short, which is what will happen when you are totally relying Cousins, Weal and Thompson. Don't get me wrong, I love those 3, but to be playing big minutes is insane!

Three assists for Kotkaniemi off three goals by Hudon in Laval. Killed it on the powerplay. Call em up together when the time comes.

Seven assists in four games since being sent down. He's fine.
