30th captain in franchise history. Hope it goes better for him than the last one, although I doubt it.

So how many games does this new captain actually play this season?

I feel like the Habs are still in awe with the Olympic Gold Shea Weber. Is he really a franchise blueliner at 33 after major surgery?

This team is obsessed with who Weber was but is he still that guy?

I saw it mentioned that they are hoping he will age like Chara, but it was pointed out that Weber missed almost as many games last season as Chara has since he turned 30.

Chelios and Lidstrom made it 40 and beyond too, but again, Weber just had major knee and foot surgery.

Habs are a gut team over a facts and numbers one, and I think this belief in Mountain Man Weber being impervious to the elements and able to withstand herculean abuse permeates throughout the organization. There's nothing to suggest any of it is true beyond Weber's imposing physique and presence, which doesn't mean much on the ice. He was quickly broken last season and will miss an entire calendar year of hockey.

Weber might very well play till he's 40 and do a decent job of it, but the Habs are treating it like a sure bet and not like a guess.

This is a silly move and does not help make the trade any better.

The captain is playing his best hockey in the tricolore. After a slow start, he's PPG since Halloween and logging 25 minutes a night. He's finally healthy after missing a calendar year and basically losing two seasons.

His infamous contract runs till he's 40 and everyone just assumes it'll be a mess for Nashville when the time comes to bite the recapture penalty, but like Markov, I wonder if the injury allowed him to save two years of wear on his knees and back, allowing him to play till past his 30s. He's already lost a step and has adapted well enough, so maybe he can be an average defenceman the length of the contract.

I'm not buying the Norris talk yet, but he's definitely found his game again after a few rough years.

Well, that was fun while it lasted. Two points and -6 since Christmas and mostly just eating minutes with Chiarot.

Shea Weber on IR with a mysterious LBI. Not great for a guy that missed a calendar year with foot and knee surgeries.

Yes, as mentioned before, it was only going to be a week, but have been EXTREMELY quiet about this one.

This has me worried. :?

For most of his Habs tenure, the captain has been either effective or injured. Right now, he's neither: mostly struggling this season, missing nets and not really taking out the trash. He had a good game against Ottawa recently and played well tonight against Winnipeg, so hopefully he turns things around.

The Shea Weber captaincy is over, and it was a strange one.

Didn't want to leave Nashville, but never complained about it for one second or indicated he was ever unhappy. The GM who acquired him had some insane dream that Weber's professionalism would somehow rise all the boats in the organization through sheer proximity. He was also in the decline phase of his career but held on as long as he could and mostly played well when he was healthy. Willed the Habs into the final and when his body finally gave out, was roped into being a captain in absentia, which never made any sense and led to an immediate organizational collapse.

The fans never really gave him any guff over being the other guy in the infamous trade, and accepted his stoicness as part of the package.

None of the failings of his time here were his fault. He was expected to be superman alongside Price and they both had their careers cut short as a result.
