What choice did they have, really? This entire organization has been built around one player.

He's the best goalie in the world, and if he's in, they've got a shot.

This is the Habs for the next 8 years, take it or leave it.

I love Price. Probably one of my favorite players in the league and Bergevin's hands were clearly tied -- but that's a lot of money tied into a goaltender. Like is he twice as good as a $6M dollar netminder?

I'd say yes. There's a thought that real star players are exponentially better than guys just a little under them.

Crosby, McDavid-types earn their money. It's the 5-6M types that can truly sink a team.

Is it the same thing with a goalie? I don't know, but Price is probably the best goalie on Earth.

He's the best goaltender in the league by a country mile and then some. Not even close.

I swear the goalie situation in the NHL is almost as bad as the QB situation in the NFL. And I find that rather puzzling. There should be a VAST talent pool to choose from, but it sure doesn't seem that way.

I don't think it was a bad move by Bergevin to do this--like everyone else has said, he had no choice--it's just too bad he's misfired so horribly just about everywhere else.

Habs also re-sign RFA Alex Galchenyuk: 3 years, 4.9M AAV

Good deal for the team, but Alex will be an ufa at the perfect time. Both sides get what they want.

Galchenyuk is going to be a UFA at 26. Gulp.

From an organizational stand point this move is probably a no brainer. And if I was a fan I would be nervous. But you have to a great goalie as a foundation...and Carey Price is the best.

Not being a fan....I love that the Habs have dumped a truck load of money for 8 years into a 29 year old goalie.....a guy that has only played 60 games 50% of the time over 10 years. Hope the backup situation is solid in Montreal.

Here is a list of 37 year old Goalies to play in the NHL. Good Company and perhaps worth the cash if he stays healthy.

Something is seriously wrong with Carey Price. 877 Save Pct. Eight year extension at 10.5AAV and NMC kicks in NEXT SEASON.

His lateral movement has gone to shit, and other teams have noticed right away.

Price still sorta out. Lindgren meanwhile is the first Habs rookie netminder since Dryden to start his career 5-0. He's a keeper.

Price this season: 3.10 GAA, 901 Save Pct.

His 8-year extension hasn't kicked in yet. Luckily for him, Rinne is having a Vezina season at 35 and Lundqvist whooped the Habs last playoffs at 35 as well, so Price at 31 still has time.

Agreed. I guess the bigger question is, can the Habs pull it all together in the next 3-4 years?

Price became the franchise leader in game played by a goalie last night, passing Jacques Plante. Got a big ovation from the home crowd and was clearly touched by it, saying it meant a lot considering the crap season he and the team have had.

Niemi should (but won't) stick around just because his Suomi-flag helm with Habs colors is one of the best-looking goalie lids in hockey.

Good long-form read about how Carey Price ended up with the Habs.

Some interesting takeaways:

Burke still finds a way to bitch and moan even though he ended up with the 2nd overall pick in that draft.

Burke was looking to move down until Risebrough chirped at him.

Pierre McGuire is an idiot (yes I know, shocking).

Someone mentions this was a very poorly-scouted draft because of the unique nature of the selection process and the lockout...and in hindsight it sure as hell shows.

Gilbert Brule's Vancouver Giants teammates didn't like him.

Both Burke's and MacLean's quotes on Anze Kopitar are hilarious.

Fun read, indeed. Draft chatter is always really interesting and refreshing because we almost never hear what people really think of these players. Sounds like no one ever doubted that Price was great, they just debated the wisdom of drafting a goalie that high.

I'd say we haven't seen a goalie prospect like him since, which is crazy to think. The position has really changed.

901 Save Pct. The defence is porous and they can't find a backup.

If you can't give a goalie like this a deal like that, then no goalie should ever get one.
