If these playoffs happen, the Habs will have to lean on their kids. They jettisoned Kovalchuk, Scandella and CJ favourites Nate Thompson and Nick Cousins at the deadline.

Kotkaniemi is healthy and en route.

The kind of shit that just magically works out for Bergevin when he stumbles into it.

Three Hab players test positive. They have not been named. Still don't know about this re-start.

Another reason why Max is not coming to camp.

Did I miss something.

https://www.tsn.ca/ilya-kovalchuk-hopin ... -1.1496181

When Kovy was traded to the Capitals he was happy to be with Ovi, but had nothing but praise for the Habs.

This article says he now has hard feelings. Again either I am mis-reading or I completely missed something.

That's an really unfortunate typo. It should read that he has NO hard feelings.

To quote some users on HF, quarantine has turned Marc Bergevin into David Lynch.

So according to reports, one thing about the new CBA is Shea Weber's cap recapture penalty (or whatever you want to call it) is a thing of the past. Nashville would've paid the price for it.

Doesn't really affect the Habs, basically Weber is like any other player with a massive deal that lasts till he's 40.

Great Hab Alex Kovalev named the head coach of the Kunlun/Beijing Red Star in the KHL. Knock 'em dead, Alex!

It would never happen, but I'd love to see Kovalev coach the Habs one day. You know, if he's actually any good at coaching...

 Totally different world, but Kovalev coached his kid's team at my local rink. Everyone said he was the worst coach they'd ever seen. Never really talked to the kids. Probably given the job because he was a former NHLer so everyone assumed he'd be a good coach, and he didn't know how to dumb the game down for kids. But to hear that last week from a few people who reffed his games and then see him named a KHL coach is just funny to me.
Best story I heard about him was my ref friend introducing himself (huge Ranger fan). Kovalev said "hi I'm Alex" and the ref was like "well, yeah, no shit" and Kovalev laughed with a sheepish grin.

I can't imagine Kovalev is all that good at coaching, but then again I thought if any player could transition to coaching with ease, it was Guy Carbonneau, so...

I'm not so sure the Kunlun Red Star are any better than a kids team in New York

Tatar had a hell of a run, but as a pending UFA his current cold streak should scare them from signing him long term.

Domi too, came in so strong but just doesn't look like he fits on this roster.

What I'm saying is, if they want Hall, they have money they can clear. Just saying.

Habs need to invest in Hall. Kotkaniemi deserves an elite winger. With all their cap space they could possibly run this lineup out next season:

Hall-Kotkaniemi-Drouin
Tatar-Suzuki-Gallagher
Domi-Danault-Armia
Lehkonen-Poehling/Evans-Byron

I mean, that's pretty good.

Here's a fantastic writeup on Suzuki and why he could be a staple for the Habs up the middle for years to come.

Also, fucking hell Hockey Men, get over your "Centers HAVE TO BE BIG" soapbox already. It's 2020!

Season over.

In a perfect world, I'd sell Domi and Tatar if they have value and go after Hall, but the market might not be there and they're still useful players. But long term I don't really want them here.

I like the defencemen individually but it's a boring unit overall. I find they all give a lot of the same looks. Could use a good passer on the back end.

Also, a backup.

Flyers played a weak, boring brand of hockey and still won in six. All their top players did nothing until Hayes finally scored in this game. Otherwise they’ve just grinder everything out.

Price was mostly good but I didn’t care for a couple of the goals he let in today.

Habs appear to be trending upward but I still don’t quite know what Bergevin’s plan is.

That's really been the whole problem this time. He makes solid trades in a vacuum, but he doesn't decisively pull the trigger when it's time to compete and doesn't tear down when it's time to rebuild. He's pissed away 21M in cap space or so the last three seasons, letting it go unused.

We can get into the errors of the past, but this year Bergevin has been blessed with a new set of downs and another opportunity to either go for it short-term or pick up long-term pieces.

In a year, Gallagher, Danault, Tatar, Petry and Armia are all UFAs. We know they won't all be back, there's no way to afford them all. So if you're going to hang on to them, you better go all out this offseason so you're competitive. That means spending to the cap and adding talent. Otherwise, trade the guys who won't stay (Tatar, Armia?) for long-term cost certainty.

You now have two centres penciled in with Suzuki and Kotkaniemi. Get consistent wingers to skate with them.

Based on the playoffs, they may want to keep the top 4 on D with Chiarot-Weber, Kulak-Petry. If it ain't broke! Romanov, Juulsen, Fleury will compete for the last two spots, so add a powerplay specialist (Gustafsson?) to round it out. Bergy loves depth, won't be afraid to block a kid and force them to play their way on.

Buyout Alzner. Burns you one season then three more with a small hit.

Get a backup for Carey take XVI.

They couldn't break the Flyers trap for one reason only: not enough talent to bust through a solid defence. Add some talent to play with Suzuki and Kotkaniemi and I think the team will get better in a hurry.
