Bergy didn't even meet with Karl Alzner at the end of the season. He only talked to Joel Bouchard. Said he doesn't want to go back to Laval, but it also doesn't sound like he's doing anything to get back in management's good graces https://www.tvasports.ca/2019/08/23/kar ... ans-la-lah

Here's something interesting...

Midly interesting stuff here....

Someone on the Habs board managed to get a screenshot of Bergevin's draft rankings (from the Habs' draft video):

Quoting user "Canadienna" from their board:

Marc Bergevin's 2019 Draft List

I just tweaked the photo slightly to make it easier to see. So far I'm pretty sure it looks like

1.Hughes
2.Kakko
3.Zegras
4.Byram
5.Turcotte
6. Krebs
7. Boldy
8.Podkolzin
9.Dach
10.Caufield
11.Seider

"Could go before 15"

12. Cozens
13. Broberg
14. Knight
15. Kaliyev

List on the right is separate (may be a continuation). What I can make out is

1. Newhook
2. Thomson
3. Heinola
4. Harley
5. Soderstrom
6. Suzuki
7. York
8. Poulin

Snoozefest in Montreal right now. Bergy might pry something loose from a cap crunched team, but I think he's ready to roll with what he has.

Local media guy Brian Wilde asked Habs fans for their bold predictions. Mine:

1. Jonathan Drouin leads the team in scoring with 65ish points: he's still the most talented guy on the team, even if the results haven't been there. I'll still bet on his talent for one more season.
2. Josh Brook joins the top-4 by season's end: Scouts rave about his smarts and ability to move the puck out of danger and up the ice. Not a lot of competition on the blueline and he's played both L and R defence.
3. Artturi Lehkonen scores 20: The team is likely to fill Shaw's role from within. Lehkonen is versatile, could see time as 2RW and 3LW, not even counting injuries.
4. Cole Caufield will sign when Wisconsin's season ends: Especially if they're in a playoff race. Kid wants to play, he's made that fairly clear. Honestly think he picked Wisconsin just for the gym pass.
5. Victor Mete has a two-goal game: kid's due!

Less bold:

1. Ryan Poehling and Nick Suzuki spend time in Laval: They're serious about getting the farm team on the right track.
2. Jordan Weal becomes a Julien favourite: Put up 10 points in 16 games here. Primed for a Byron-like renaissance.
3. Jesperi Kotkaniemi improves overall game, but still doesn't put up monster points: 40 points or so?
4. Ben Chiarot fills the Jordie Benn role adequately, still overpaid.

I think a lot of the team's early fortunes will be tied to how the defence comes together. I don't hate the crew they've assembled, but I can see how things might go sideways in a hurry.

Petry's fine.
Weber missed time. He's healthy now.
Kulak was remarkable after coming over. Full season from him.
Mete is only 21. Already an established guy.
Chiarot played 18-20 mins in the playoffs last season.
Juulsen was hurt, no idea what to expect from him.
Reilly started off strong, tailed off. They won't expect as much from him, could succeed in a depth role.
Folin is your 8. That's fine.

After that, Brook and Fleury are your top prospects in Laval. Both could be knocking on the door come December.
Ouellet is your captain in Laval, but could get a callup.
Leskinen and Sklenicka are your Euro overagers in Laval. Both could get callups at some point.
Olofsson is your injured wildcard in Laval. Prospect pedigree.
Alzner may be forced to report to Laval. Somehow see this getting resolved.

Is there enough for a consistent 8-9 in there to play the bulk of the minutes? Once injuries hit, I'm not so sure, but Bergevin likes to add depth. Here's hoping he finds another Kulak.

One RFA I'd look at: Brendan Lemieux. Claude's boy is a pot stirrer who showed an offensive uptick in his brief New York audition. Like Domi Jr I think he's suited for a pressure cooker environment.

Comparable guy Barbashev just signed for 1.4m AAV for 2 years. A similar deal, with a little more to give NYR pause, would mean a 3rd rounder as compensation.

Habs have some good prospects, but nothing resembling that awesome Blues third line. They need sandpaper guys who can actually play, and Pepe's kid can hang.

Golf tournament/press schmoozer today. Bergevin said no PTOs, time for the young guns to push the conversation.

Sounds like unless they fall flat in camp, Poehling and Suzuki are making the team. I assume at 4C and 2RW, respectively.

I like that philosophy. I hope the Avs aren't going to issue any PTOs (well, not officially...unfortunately Nichushkin is essentially a PTO because if he doesn't make the team he'll bolt for Europe, and void the contract).

If anything, I think they view Peca, Hudon and McCarron as PTOs in a sense. Not really needed in Laval, not really wanted in Montreal. All under contract. They'll have a chance to prove themselves in camp, and if not the Habs may try to release them outright.

D Noah Juulsen, who suffered a horrible facial fracture last season after taking two pucks to the eye, has been shut down again with headaches. He's seeing a specialist. With eye/head injuries, it's serious business. I wonder if his career is in jeopardy.

The man just wants to win damnit.

Of course, in a selfish way, I wish we’d sell all of our assets and just go all out next year.”

Price laughed and then added: “But I totally understand you can’t do that. This is a real thing and you need to plan for the future. Obviously, I want work to be done to give us the best opportunity to win because ultimately that’s what I’m here to do. I don’t want to wait. I just don’t.”

Poehling "scored" an absolute doozy in Bathurst, NB last night against the Panthers. Belzile actually scored but Poehling did all the work.

The real question in camp is whether Suzuki and Poehling can play their way on the team. I think the team is good with them in Laval or Montreal either way, but if they force the issue, they're in.

Suzuki and Poehling already have highlight reel plays so far this preseason. They're forcing the issue. Can they keep them both?

A little surprised to see Evans sent down this early, but I guess there's no room right now. Suzuki still has a shot.

Friedman says Drouin is on the block. The one guy from last season who had a little more to give.

Two years ago they traded their future 1LD Sergachev to Tampa Bay for him. He's signed I think to a reasonable long-term cost certain 5.5M AAV deal for a guy who's at worst proven to be a 53-point guy but who probably has more offence in him.

I wouldn't be so quick to move him unless you get a good offer. It would probably take Drouin + Poehling + pick to get in conversation for Connor or Laine, which I'm not thrilled about.

Really hard to imagine Nick Suzuki not making the team at this point. He's clearly ready.

No surprise: Matthew Peca, Philip Varone, Karl Alzner, Xavier Ouellet, and Dale Weise all cut. That's a few bucks in cap relief headed to Laval.

I do think Weise and Alzner are being punished for being bad and won't get a shot this season. But I could be wrong. Peca really played his way off the team, wonder if he'll get a shot elsewhere.
