From Pierre LeBrun:

Quote:
The Los Angeles Kings had talks with the Habs earlier in the week and while neither team want to confirm it, my sense is that a potential trade was possible but the Kings couldn’t agree to a contract extension with Pacioretty, who is UFA a year from now. Although that’s not to say the Kings and Habs had all the elements worked out either in a trade because I don’t think they did. But they had those conversations.

Then on Saturday, we found out Pacioretty had switched agents, leaving Pat Brisson for Allan Walsh, which the latter made official on his Twitter account.

Good gravy this Pacioretty situation is a mess. I know we say this a lot, but what the hell is Bergevin thinking? That's the captain you're treating poorly.

More on Patches. Looks like he changed agents mid deal?

Yeah, which can't be a good thing, no matter how one interprets it.

UFA season is coming up and mythical franchise saviour John Tavares wants nothing to do with the Habs shitshow. This is a good thing because even JT can't single handedly save them and it's good to not get caught up in the illusion.

But the Habs do have moolah to burn and lots of holes to fill. Any UFA's screaming out to y'all? Any one that they won't regret in three months? After the Alzner debacle last season I'd be cool with Bergevin staying on the sidelines, but his job might be on thin ice, the team needs instant results and they may have just run their captain out of town, so he probably feels he needs to walk away with Stastny and Johnson or something. Meh.

At least Stastny can teach Kotkaniemi and Poehling a thing or two.

I would like this.

And.

Patches for Coyle straight up...

Does Minny have any bad contracts we could take back to sweeten the deal?

The Habs are going to need to eat a bit of shit on a deal for a year or two.

That's how the cap space could be helpful.

If Stazz signs in Montreal that's fine by me but we'll know what he prioritized then.

Don’t be surprised if when all is said and done on July 1, Tomas Plekanec is back in MTL.

:haha:

Bergevin finally trades his lone asset: cap space.

Adds Steve Mason's contract with Joel Armia and two picks as sweetener. Finally a pro-active move from the typically reactionary GM. Apparently they've wanted Armia for a while and he's Jesperi Kotkaniemi's fave Assat grad. Mason immediately bought out, 1.3M on the cap this year and next.

Armia is a right-handed RW with consecutive double-digit goal seasons. The sort of guy who might show something with more ice-time.

In case you're wondering, Habs have 18M in cap space left. Danault, Armia and De La Rose the lone big squad RFAs. 7M max to bring all three back? (3.5 + 2 + 1.5)

11-12M leftover maybe?

My predictions for Habs free agency tomorrow:

1. Habs sign LD Tobias Enstrom to a 2-year deal

2. Habs sign C Tomas Plekanec and/or LD Andrei Markov so they can both reach 1000 games in MTL, because what else are they going to sell this season?

3. Habs sign LW Anthony Duclair, LD Xavier Ouellet and some other goodies for Laval, because they want their shiny newish minor league team to win next season and take some pressure off the big club

No idea what's going to happen with Pacioretty. When JT signs and some of the other dominoes fall, some teams like St. Louis and Anaheim might be left looking for talent. Otherwise why not bury the hatchet and re-sign him? You ain't getting any other goal scorers, or anyone else to take your money.

Habs sign Ouellet, Plekanec and small, speedy C Matthew Peca. Peca will probably help Laval but given the state of centres in Montreal could make the big club. Unrelated to Michael.

Things could be worse- you could be the Isles.

I disagree with you there. The habs are completely clueless and really no hope until management has been banished. Isles look like they can turn it around in under 5 years.....

Imagine the Isles signed Tavares then traded him a year or two later for Joe Thornton. That's basically what the Habs did.

Komarov for 3 years.
Kuhnackl.
Filppula.
Traded for Matt Martin.
"Character and grit" guys. That's how the Isles are rebuilding after Tavares' departure.

Goalies are Lehner and Greiss. While I think both are due for a bounce back year, do I trust in them? Nope.

Maybe the league would let the Isles & Habs merge. They could form 1 really good team. They could play in 3 arenas this year.

Yeah, I had to add the joke at the end to make myself laugh too.

I just want to see the Leafs go 0-82. For 7 straight years.
