If the Habs had never traded PK or made any moves after, this is what the team would look like today:

Pacioretty-Danault-Gallagher
Galchenyuk-Eller-Andrighetto
Byron-Plekanec-Scherbak
Hudon-Desharnais-Smith Pelly
De La Rose

Markov-Subban
Sergachev-Petry
Emelin-Pateryn
Beaulieu

Price

Imagine that team with Radulov at 1RW. Playoff team, I would think. Still weak at centre but no worse than today.

Lehkonen and De La Rose are looking good now that they're playing a lot.

Post subject:  Re: Fuck this team

Pacioretty-?-Gallagher
Galchenyuk-Drouin-Scherbak
Hudon-Danault-Shaw
Lehkonen-De La Rose-Byron

Deslauriers, Evans

?-Weber
Mete-Petry
Alzner-Juulsen

Reilly, Valiev

Pricegren

About 20M in cap space to fill those two spots, plus maybe 3M for holding on to Schlemko and/or Benn for depth.

I don't think I've ever seen the city less interested in the Habs or less confident anything is going to change. The only person who seems to trust Bergevin in Montreal is the owner. The whole city is on standby, waiting for the GM to inevitably get canned before they start caring again. Till then, they're happy to ignore the team and spend their money and time elsewhere.

I do hear a lot of people joking that they think the Cup will be making a trip to the Montreal Children's Hospital this summer...

Soooo apparently Bergevin offered more money to Lucic back in the day and still thinks he's what his team needs. Lucic still has 5 years, 30M left on his awful deal with Edmo.

The Habs have underwater contracts of their own: Alzner has almost 20M on his deal and Schlemko has 6.3M.

Of course, Karl and Milan have no-trade/move rights to varying degrees, and I could see the latter not wanting to play for Montreal. But it's an idea to move some dead money around and give these guys fresh starts.

Someone posted a thread on HF with the title Proposal: O'Reilly to Montreal.

I didn't click on it, but...if ever there was a team looking to dump an extra center and a team that desperately needed one...

Of course I can't see that happening between two division rivals, but, man that'd be interesting.

O'Reilly is such an obvious Bergevin player it's scary to think who he'd move to get him. He even has the phony, undeserved reputation as a heart and soul guy that Bergevin falls for.

Sounds like Buffalo will make offers for all the big names --- Tavares, Carlson -- so there's a chance they'll dump him for less than he's worth.

That's a Bergy trade right there: Talent for Kar-ak-tar.

"I believe that with a better or different attitude, we don't have 40 losses." -Marc Bergevin

Wow. This team is going nowhere.

What a brutal end-of-season presser with Bergevin and Molson. Walked in, talked up transparency then proceeded to yell and scream at all the tough questions.

Surgery for Paul Byron. Out six months, so into next season. His shoulder was as they say in French, magané. Sure that doesn't need a translation.

Now Shaw is out six months with knee surgery. Had to wait a month to get fixed up because he was still recovering from a concussion.

Byron and Shaw are quality players when healthy, but they're not destined to play long careers. The trouble with hard-nosed guys like them.

Meanwhile, on the offseason front, I could really see the Habs making a push for Riley Nash at C. Versatile 3C on a good Boston team and put up points. Replaced an injured Bergeron on the top line and looked fine. Not a high-end guy or a solution to their talent problems, but a serviceable 200-foot guy, which is Bergy's bread and butter.

Oh yeah, and local franco media is pushing for the Habs to bring Maxim Lapierre back, who's a game away from winning a title in Switzerland. He's 33. Dear god no.

I'm not paying attention to this team... nor do I care about it... honest...

So. There's only one solution. Bring back the Nordiques.

The Nordiques were Quebec's team, by which I mean, they were team of the Francophone population. For God's sake, He Shoots, He Scores would not have been made with the Montreal Canadiens. If the Nordiques ever came back - and they won't - then Montreal would be free from its Francophone requirements because everyone outside of Montreal could just cheer for the Nordiques, which I think is the norm as when I worked in and around QC, they really didn't see Montreal as being part of the province because it wasn't French enough.

It won't happen because Montreal is paranoid about this - when the Nordiques rose in popularity in the WHA and then the NHL, I think it freaked the Habs and ever since (from the 80's on), we now have the push for Francophone content on the Habs.

But the modern landscape is different. Montreal could easily survive alongside the Nordiques, but I suspect Molson is blocking this idea because his focus is clearly the financial bottom line, but from a very conservative viewpoint of not losing what he has got vs. growing his potential.

Totally agreed on the Nords thing. I think it would spark them and get them out of this complacency that's been around since the mid-90s.

Meanwhile, the Habs are about to get a Top 3 pick. Dahlin would kickstart this stupid franchise. Habs won the Cup the last time they were led by a Swede.

Habs at the 3 spot is good but has the potential to be fucked up. If it goes Rasmus-Zadina, the Habs could pass on Svech because CJ doesn't like Russians. Tkachuk is ok but nowhere near the upside. The Finnish centre might climb the board.

Could also see them trading the pick.
