No playoffs again for the Habs. The rebuild continues.

Still one more game to play. Poehling in tonight. Lindgren in nets.

Weal will play a lot too, I'm guessing. I think they'll try to re-sign him. Strong RH centre in his brief audition.

What a game on Bob Cole's last night! Poehling first game and puts up a hattie!

OMG Poehling what a night!!!!

Best team points-wise ever to not make the playoffs. It's true.

And that points total would've had them in line for a possible Central Division title if they were in the West.

On the one hand, the Habs exceeded expectations, were the only positive goal differential team to miss the playoffs and were only two wins behind the supposedly much better Leafs.

On the other, it's 3 missed playoffs in the last four seasons, and more than a few guys had career years they may not replicate.

The mission this offseason: improve the defence, find a dynamic offensive player. Drouin might be dangled, but he's the one guy who could bounce back. For the first time in a while, they might not be in the hunt for a premiere centre, although they are seemingly interested in Duchene. Just saying it's nice to not have a top-6 centre as a priority for a change.

Report cards:

Domi A - whoa, not even in Bergy's wildest dreams
Gallagher A - healthy two straight seasons
Tatar A- - Grifted the Knights
Shaw A- - finally healthy. Is this the real Shawzy? Probably not, but he's helpful
Drouin C - Eh boy. Still their most dynamic guy, still not entirely sure he fits with CJ
Danault A- - Poor man's Bergeron actually not as farfetched as people think? Still think he slots as a future 3 behind Kk and RP
Armia C - The new Eller. Best forechecker, strongest dude, limited offence
Lehkonen B- - Best two-way guy, horrible finish
Byron C - Hurt a bunch, got in a dumb fight. Essential guy, but he gets beat up
Kotkaniemi B - Hit a wall with two months left, but pretty good start for a teenage stringbean
Deslauriers D - Muscle
Weal B - Much needed RH centre. Clearly needs a sorta offensive role, which is why he flamed out elsewhere. Suspect they want him back
Thompson C - Also a solid deadline acquisition. Could come back too
Peca F - He and Czarnik didn't really work out. So much for giving upside AHL guys big league deals
Hudon F - He gone
Poehling A++ - WHOA! Can he win a spot out of camp next season?

Petry A - Their best defenceman, and I don't think it's close
Weber B- - Bound to have rust after a year off, but I don't get the appeal some nights. He stands in front of the net and sometimes shoos the puck away. Getting beat more and more on the outside
Kulak B- - Pretty solid find. Blocked in Calgary, but he's a solid bottom pair here. OK at everything, great at nothing
Benn B- - Best offensive season ever. Pending UFA but why not bring him back?
Mete C - Overmatched early but hung in there. Still the best guy for Weber. Worst shot I've ever seen for an NHLer
Reilly C- - Another decent scrap heap pickup. Pressboxed the last two months. Figure he'll get another shot elsewhere
Folin C - Not terrible! Physical without being a total waste of space. Free agent, might come back
Alzner F - He done
Ouellet D - Hope he likes Laval
Juulsen n/a - serious eye injury. Career in pretty big trouble

Price B - Good but not great season by his standards. His good is still pretty awesome, though.
Niemi F - He done
Lindgren n/a - backup material? Not sure

On the farm, Evans had a great first season, and Vejdemo and Fleury improved.

2019-20 lineup right now:

Drouin-Domi-Shaw
Tatar-Danault-Gallagher
Lehkonen-Kotkaniemi-Armia
Byron-Poehling-????

Mete-Weber
????-Petry
Kulak-????

Some UFA defencemen to consider:

LH: Gardiner, Edler, JayBo, Methot, Hainsey, Chiarot, Hunt, Markov (?)
RH: Karlsson

You can cross Bouwmeester off that list, he just signed for one more (and likely final) year in St. Louis.

Apart from Gardiner and Karlsson, that's a pretty awful list, even before J-Bo was removed.

I do think the Habs are in the perfect position to drop coin on Gardiner. He's exactly what they need, there's divisional familiarity, and the Habs can stick it to the Leafs. Reminds me a bit of Petry in his Edmo days: wildly underrated by the fanbase.

Habs will draft 15th. All signs pointing to them satisfying their need for a defenceman in a defence-heavy draft.

Bergevin had his season-ender and didn't say anything we don't already know. He said Drouin still has things to learn but he's getting there. His end-of-season meltdown (mostly pointless his last 25 games), seems to be the result of a lower-body injury that sapped him of his agility. Makes sense.

Bragged about people laughing at his "Domi wants to play in a big market" reason for acquiring him. Enjoy that victory lap, Bergy.

The surprising bit was Price acknowledging that his window is closing. Methinks Bergevin heard that loud and clear, but the last time the players (including Price) lobbied for a free agent, Karl Alzner came to town.

Offseason holes to plug:

Tatar-Danault-Gallagher
Drouin-Domi-????
Lehkonen-Kotkaniemi-Armia
Byron-Poehling-Shaw

Mete-Weber
????-Petry
Kulak-????

Price
????

RW could be patchworked by moving up Shaw and bringing back Weal/have Suzuki make the team.
LD is in Reilly's hands right now, so that'll change. If Methot's career isn't over, I see him as a Bergy guy. Otherwise Markov wants back, but may be done as well.
Depth D? I assume they'll want Benn back, but he might actually get money from someone. Kinda underrated at 16 mins a night. Juulsen could be healthy, but maybe not.

Weal will be back.

Clood will make him a really productive player.

Our big problem is on D.

If Markov could come back and play half the games as the 5/6 guy, this team is miles ahead of where it was.

The guy they brought in to fill that second pairing LD spot, Karl Alzner, is still here. Playing in Laval while 3.6M of his annual salary goes against the cap.

Two schools of thought on him: 1) can't play a fast game, but could be a depth guy on a slower team 2) just plain done, hernia robbed him of what little speed he had left.

First season with the Habs wasn't that bad in hindsight: lousy defenceman on a lousy team able to absorb 20 mins a night. Based on the events that would unfold, it's apparent Bergevin and Julien gave him offseason marching orders that he didn't follow (lose weight, work on skating), because they purposely ended his ironman streak opening night and sent him to the minors not long after. You don't do that to a guy you're trying to build back up.

No doubt Bergevin will try to move him this offseason for someone else's problem contract. Bergevin could take on a deal with a higher AAV and two years (Sekera, Dion, Dubinsky), while some other team may want immediate relief spread out over three years. Here's hoping he finds that team.

But if they can't move him? Is there some way he can work his way back to being at least a Corsi-zero-sum workhorse like he was in year one? And would that be worth having around?

Didn't you say he was told to lose some weight in the offseason and refused, and that's what led to his waivers exile? Doesn't sound like either side would be looking forward to working together again. But if Andy MacDonald somehow keeps finding his way back in Philly anything's possible.

Yeah, can't remember if it was confirmed, but yeah, Alzner was told to get lighter and faster and didn't do it.

Habs rumoured to be looking at two Russian FA forwards:

Vladimir Bryukvin - RW with Dynamo
Konstantin Okulov - LW with CSKA

Both early 20s with Cy Young splits, so more goal scorers. OK sized. The former was at a Habs tryout last year, so they must have liked what they saw.

I'm hoping they take a look at longtime Berlin Polar Bear LD Jonas Muller. Still only 23, but he's been in the DEL since he was a teen. Played on the silver medal German team, not an offensive force but considered a good all-around guy with poise.

Some good news for Habs defenceman Noah Juulsen: after missing most of the season with an eye injury that appeared career threatening at one point, he's been cleared to play next season.

He's historically had trouble staying healthy, but he's a serviceable 3rd pairing dman already and could be more, although he's blocked on the right side by Weber and Petry.

Karpat absolutely clobbered the Finnish League this year, and their nucleus is looking to come over. The biggest prize, and relevant to the Habs' interests, is RW Ville Leskinen. 6'1, 185, 25 years old. Undrafted but nearly PPG in Finland the last two seasons.

Could slot in nicely on the 2nd line, not cost a fortune. It's the sort of upside move that could work better than praying for Wayne Simmonds to be healthy.

Yup, ok depth guy. Wouldn't ride him too much, but a decent 4th line option.

Feel like he took a slight discount to return. He said he wanted back.
