The Habs are fucked for the next decade, unless they somehow acquire a Tavares-type this offseason.

Weber was almost worst-case scenario. Not because he didn't play well, because he was fine, but he played about as well as expected and it just didn't move the needle at all. He still got beat by faster players from time to time and generated little offence or puck movement out of the zone. If that's all that can be expected of him, then the trade will go down as an unmitigated disaster. He's no Pronger.

Radulov is a UFA and they have no choice but to give him whatever.

Price is a UFA after next season, and if the team can't win with him making 6.5M, why bother trying to win with him making 10M? Trading him is now on the table.

Pacioretty is getting a lot of blame, but Danault was his centre. Max has a huge X on his back every night because so much of the team's offence relies on him.

In the elimination game, Galchenyuk was a winger on a line centered by Brian Flynn and Beaulieu was scratched. They're gone, and knowing Bergevin, he's probably deflated their value with all the shit he's been talking about them over the years.

Plekanec? He might have saved his Habs career with his solid playoffs, but he'll still be exposed in the expansion draft.
Gallagher was fine.
Shaw is fine when healthy, which isn't often.
Byron will never score 20 goals again.
Lehkonen and Danault are valuable pieces going forward.
Benn was exposed badly in the playoffs. 15 minute-man, tops. The exact sort of player Bergevin will sign to an extension.
Mitchell is a 4th liner, but can't really play every day.
Didn't see enough of McCarron, Carr, De La Rose. More young players getting jerked around.
The 4th liners (King, Flynn, Martinsen, Ott) shouldn't be back.
Petry and Emelin are overpaid, but do their respective things well.
Davidson exists.
Nesterov won't be back.
Montoya won't be back.

Who will they lose in the expansion draft? Montoya, Plekanec, Benn, De La Rose, Hudon, Mitchell are all possibilities.

I don't understand how this team can keep Weber. A depreciating asset, but still valuable to a contender and you can still get something for him. Preferably a forward and a defenceman.

If you're set on dealing Galchenyuk and Beaulieu, that's fine, but Weber might actually fetch you something.

Agree. The biggest issue with Weber is his age (32 next season), therefore a depreciating asset - and the NHL is only getting faster. Weber still has value though. If they can find a trading partner by moving him to a contender needing another piece to get them over the, that would be ideal. It's a big 'if' though.

I liked Montoya, but I seriously doubt he'll be taken in the expansion draft. Many better goalies avaiable.

Montoya might get taken because the Habs don't have much else to offer. Other goalies will be available, but those teams might have better forwards and defence exposed as well.

Bergevin presser today at 4:30 pm. I'm guessing he still thinks he's the smartest man in the room.

Added woes: Toronto, Ottawa and Boston are improving. Florida and Tampa should rebound. Buffalo has the talent. If the Habs stand pat, they could find themselves getting leapfrogged in a hurry.

I read an analysis of Weber(from a huge Weber fan, no less) that basically says that he doesn't skate the puck out of the zone and he's suffered since Suter left. He ended up getting hemmed in the zone a lot longer with Josi than Suter. Paired with Emelin? Frigging yikes.

That article gets it.

It all comes down to ideology: Can you be an effective defenceman if you don't touch the puck? The Habs not only say yes, they think it makes you better than a puck carrier. This could be partially motivated by having the the best stickhandling goalie in nets.

Weber excels at positioning, reading the play, being physical down low, keeping forwards to the outside, clearing the crease.

He does not hold on to the puck for more than a second or two in his zone: he'll either feed his d-pairing partner or chuck the puck to open ice.

If he's hemmed in his own zone, he keeps opponents from going towards the net or getting a scoring chance, but he doesn't aggressively try to clear the zone. What's better, standing back and hoping for a stoppage, or attempting to force a turnover, which could leave you exposed? Habs say turtle and wait for Carey to stop the play.

Basically exactly what you and Sam Page wrote.

The Habs should still be able to find a taker enamoured with him, but are they still too enamoured to move him?

Shaw had at least 2 known concussions this season. Five years left on his deal.

Bergevin/Julien season-ending presser: stay the course

Bergevin sees Galchenyuk as a winger until further notice.
Bergevin says the clock is ticking on Beaulieu.
Bergevin says the staff is fine and the players need to be held accountable for not developing.
Bergevin says offence is at a premium, and don't expect them to add any.
Bergevin is going to work to re-sign Price and Radulov when the CBA allows him.
Bergevin was in a calm mood for about 20 minutes before getting grumpy.

I think Alex Galchenyuk can be a number one centre. I think he is one.

If the Habs are expecting him to become to next Toews (which a stammering Bergevin alluded to yesterday), then guess again.

Fuck this team.

Hilarious. "You guys have a shitload of potential and our staff are great, so it's all your fault you're not reaching that potential."

Habs sign KHL defenceman Jakub Jerabek. Known for his offensive prowess, a little undersized at 5'11, 190. 25 yrs old.

Did he grow an inch & add 10 lbs since your post about him in the Signing forum? If so, he should be a monster by the start of the season!

Habs sign undrafted QMJHL forward Antoine Waked to an ELC.

He's 6'1, 190. Not much of a player until this season, where he scored 39 goals for Rouyn-Noranda as a 20 year-old.

Late bloomer, or just an older guy dominating a bunch of kids? We shall see. Either way, a no-risk signing.

Jerabek signing official. He's back to being 5'11, 190.

The Habs hope they have a new third pairing defenceman that can replace whoever they lose in the expansion draft.

PK moves on to the next round.

Meanwhile, Bergevin hasn't made an announcement regarding the AHL staff. Their contracts have expired.

Habs spared the ultimate humiliation as PK does not get the Cup his first year in Nashville.

Does little to help Montreal's future, though.

Even Bergevin's biggest boosters in the media are screaming for a top centre and for him to not undersell Galchenyuk and Beaulieu.
