I just don't think goal scorers make great captains. Your job is to score, which is inherently a selfish act. Better to let Max concentrate on hitting the back of the net and not on other things that could diminish his goal scoring instincts. Sure, Ovi just won a Cup, but he's the best goal scorer of his generation and it still took a decade and a stacked team. Max is the only scorer worth a damn on this team, making him an easy target for opposing teams.

I think Canadian franchises are in a rut because there are a lot of politics in play besides winning. You have to appeal to the Cherry's of this country by offering a product based on "good old Canadian boys" when that style of play is becoming passe. In Quebec you're supposed to get local boys who can emulate the Flying Frenchman. Such players don't really exist anymore. For the players, there's the added pressure of playing in these overcooked markets. The three Western teams have pretty crappy travel routes, although the Cali teams seem to manage. Fans and media are constantly second guessing every little decision. Owners get impatient. Canadian teams are more obsessed with their pasts. Montreal, Edmonton and even Calgary are stuck trying to relive the glory days. Toronto only just got out of it by tanking for three years. This iteration of Winnipeg has no history, which makes it easier to rebuild quietly, as Chevy did. Ottawa is just plain cheap and bad for different reasons.

This whole thing between his agent and the Habs is entertaining from the outside. Sure it's not fun for you guys though.

Canadian teams are only now getting comfortable with the tanking idea that most successful teams have gone through. A year or two of a few 5-10 overall picks no longer gets it done you need a couple of those and a couple of top fives these days to build.

Agreed. You need at least one franchise player amongst these.

Really the Galchenyuk draft is what hurt the Habs. Not that he was even all that bad a pick just unlucky and not a good season to be drafting high given the options.

Not sure drafting someone else would've made a difference. The Habs totally messed up Alex's development from the start, and never put him in a situation where he could learn how to play centre properly over an extended period of time.

Yeah looking back it was a weak draft though. The bottomed out in the wrong season and if that 3rd overall lands them a legit 1st line stud or Defense other things likely turn out different. But coulda woulda shoulda....

Yeah, 2012 is looking like a historically bad draft.

Ugh...wasn't there a barf icon somewhere?

And don't forget, that was actually a three-way deal that had Tampa swapping Quincey w/Colorado for Steve Downie beforehand. Yzerman done good on that one.

Too lazy to look up if I already posted this but I can't believe the Habs are trading Patches since they blasted Galchenyuk (and others) for being unable to handle the pressure cooker situation of playing in Montreal. Max embraced the pressure, the city, the captaincy, and lives in Montreal full-time. You want to trade THAT guy!?!?

Allan Walsh saying what everyone already knows: Bergevin leaks to the French media. About Galchenyuk partying, about PK being selfish. Why? Dunno, seems like a dumb strategy, but he's a pretty dumb guy.

Max won't negotiate an extension with the Habs or anyone once the season starts.
