Not an easy decision to make, but I don't think you can wrong with Max or PK. Max got it because he doesn't chirp at the refs.

A CT Yankee, Captain in Montreal's Court. Who'd have thunk it?

Ouch, how much money is he going to have to give to charity now?

I kid, as EL said could have gone either way just glad they named one.

PK and Max are both working on their French, so you know they're taking this seriously.

It was actually a player vote. Max won by a comfortable amount.

Now Bergevin has to explain to a neighbor that he is in fact not the Canadiens captain.

#Habs Max Pacioretty has a -51 decline in plus minus from this season to last season (+38 last season, -13 this season).

Goals:

2013-14 39g
2014-15 37g
2015-16 24g

Max's first season as captain has been a disaster. It started with a very serious off-season injury that I don't think he's totally recovered from. It was a player vote so I can't criticize the move, but he's looked out of his depth.

Decision time looming on the Habs' captain. Pacioretty had a down season, missing 30 goals after five seasons of reaching the mark.

In 2016-17, the team won the division and got Lundqvist'd (eww) in the first round. Max couldn't score and took a lot of the blame.

In 2017-18, they were just plain bad.

If they can re-sign him to the Marchand deal (8 years/6.2M AAV) after a down year, they should do it. Unfortunately, he's probably looking to get paid after his last team-friendly deal and scoring 30 will net him a sweet payday easily.

So what do the Habs do? Deal him now and start yet another culture shift, or wait and see what the season holds? Or do you try to sign him now and commit to a Price-Weber-Max nucleus for the next decade?

He's an elite goal scorer, but is he a true captain? Would he be better off elsewhere? Would the Habs be better off trading him for a centre and putting Shea as captain?

Think they have to keep him at this point and revisit during trade deadline or before if he reestablishes his scoring touch to start the season. They want to trade him with the value of a 35 goal scorer and teams worry they will acquire a declining 20 goal scorer instead and suspect the offers out there reflect that.

Wonder if Bergevin is going to try and do with Sakic did with Duchene and try and wait out a deal while the player inflates his trade value.

The problem Bergevin put himself in is it's been widely reported that the team didn't make an offer to Max on July 1, so it's pretty clear he'll leave as a UFA next July 1. So they're trying to trade a rental guy for legit NHL assets and can't fall back and say they'll keep him if the offers are bad.

At this point they might bring him back to start the season, play horribly and then deal him sometime before the deadline for pennies on the dollar, so at least Bergevin can say the team was bad and he "needed to do something to change the room."

Habs have sucked and lucked their way into some young centres. Basically it's blow everything up and wait for Kotkaniemi and Poehling to potentially take over.

Pacioretty golf tournament today. Molson and Bergevin were there, all smiles, except they all admitted there's been no talk about an extension yet.

Maybe Max wants to bounce back before committing, or maybe the Habs aren't interested. Or both. Who knows, but it looks like Max will enter the season a Hab.

Maybe it's the media drumming things up but it sure sounds like things were super-awkward at the event.

I'm learning just recently that things were super-duper awkward at Avs training camp last year, like obvious to the casual observers present. The only thing that lightened the mood was Nail Yakupov, oblivious to all the drama behind the scenes, going over and talking up Duchene when no one else would. In hindsight, all the discomfort and awkwardness was worth it because they maximized the return on the deal. Not sure if the same circumstances apply to Max, however.

It was awkward, but how couldn't it be? Max is 90% leaving either soon, the deadline or next July 1. Only way he stays is he has a crazy good season, the Habs suddenly become interested in giving him a long-term deal, and Max loves Montreal and their potential so much he decides this is the place to be. As of right now, Max wants to stay but at a certain price, and the Habs don't want him at all.

What'll probably happen is he'll start a Hab, play really well because he's motivated, score 30, then get dealt at the deadline for a decent haul: low 1st and a young player for 2019-20. Habs start fresh Oct 2019 with Kotkaniemi and Poehling in the lineup, Gallagher named captain.

Walsh is daring Bergevin to trade Max. Love it.

Walsh is a rat and Max gave up on the team last year.

PK never gave up.

They made the wrong man captain.

I don't think he gave up, he didn't have an actual center setting him up for shots, and didn't have a defense that could move the puck into the zone to begin with behind him. Max is a finisher, he doesn't generate offense on his own.

FTR I don't buy into any supposed feud between P.K. and Patches.

I'd also say that "giving up" happens a lot. Pretty much all the Avs quit by December in 2016-17, only Duchene very subtly admitted to it. Anyone would have in those circumstances. I know we'd all love our favorite players to grind it out even when the season goes completely awry but most of them just ain't like that.

Maybe Gallagher is a better choice to wear the C, I don't know. Either way, the Habs could not be handling this situation much worse.

4 of the 7 Canadian franchises are a complete train wreck - and arguably 5. What gives? Just a cycle or too much pressure?
