Semin's a streaky goal-scorer: his goals come in spurts.

Montreal is a hockey glory hole so if Semin is going to stick anywhere it will be there.

OK, so nine games in Semin has one goal and three points. Not great, but not unexpected.

So far, he looks sluggish. When he has the puck, he generates chances. He's lost a bit on his release, though. Looks like his wrist hasn't fully recovered.

He's not dogging it, but he's not the player he once was. He can still be a useful offensive player.

Semin has landed in the press box: healthy scratch the last six games.

Part of it is his own doing: ineffectiveness on the PP and lack of foot speed, but it's also because the lineup has been so healthy. 11 forwards have played all 16 games so far, and the only lineup change this season has been Semin for Byron. He'll get another shot.

Will Semin land in minors?

While him failing isn't a huge shock, if you'd have told me before the season that between Fleischmann and Semin that Fleischmann was going to work out, I'd have said you were crazy.

It goes to show that a player can learn to adapt with declining speed/skills. Fleischmann had the smarts and willingness, along with a quality playmaker feeding him the puck.

Fortunately Semin will not end up in minors. Instead, Semin will be shooting over to Mother Russia. https://twitter.com/IgorEronko/status/6 ... 4498220032

I feel bad things didn't work out because now everyone assumes he didn't try/has no heart etc.

The truth is he lost a step and his wrist never really recovered. When he had the puck you could see his hockey smarts, but more often than not he was just struggling to keep up. I think the untimely penalties did him in more than lack of production -- it made him a serious liability. Andrighetto is already better than him, but I wouldn't say he's ready to be a consistently productive top-6 winger.

I think the new NHL game has passed him by, which is quite incredible considering he is only 31. This is more of a commentary on how quickly the NHL has changed within the last 3 seasons -- become faster, smaller, not as much goonery than an actual indictment on his skill and ability. Wonder if players his age like he and Kesler will also have careers cut short. Sweet spot used to be 25-33, now it's more like 21-29.

But then I didn't watch Semin play every night:

Wrist injuries are usually not as devastating in other sports as they are in hockey. Lecavalier pretty much went from Hart contender to scrub seemingly overnight.

Alex Semin contributes nicely to Magnitogorsk's playoff run; 7pts in 11GP, 16.47TOI. Check when he left #Habs and when season went downhill.

So you're saying a lack of Semin has caused the Habs to be impotent? Can't score without Semin?
