At around 5.75M per (last year's salary).

That third year might be rough, but he's still needed.

Who'll play the right side, though? I'd like Emelin to move back to the left side.

Can Gorges play right? Tinordi can, from what I've read.

How about:

Markov-Subban
Beaulieu-Gorges
Emelin-Tinordi

Pretty good, if you ask me.

Gorges played RD pre-surgery in 2012. Gill-Gorges and Markov-Gorges were very common. Tinordi has done a great job when called upon to play RD. Plus, as far as physical tools he provides what Emelin does, plus a better reach, better skating ability and more of a fear factor in terms of fisticuffs.

I can't emphasize enough how Emelin needs to go, though. I'm not buying the shortened 12/13 campaign as his true self. He's had two lousy years compared to a half year of good play. Even if he recovers as a good LD, we have Markov, Gorges and Beaulieu there. The only way he is better than those guys is if Beaulieu busts, Markov crumbles in old age or Gorges gets massive injuries... basically stuff that could happen but could also just happen to Emelin. On RD we can run Subban, Tinordi, Weaver, then Nygren/Pateryn. It's still a weak spot but a more cost efficient one.

On radio the other day, Arpon Basu from LNH.com said Emelin has been playing RD for years, including in Ak-Bars, so that's not the issue. He says Emelin's problem is dealing with fast teams (why he looked good against Boston/Lucic and horrible against New York). He can't turn around fast enough to beat forecheckers.

There are so few options at D, it's possible Weaver might get a decent two-year deal from someone. He won't be brought back. No word on Bouillon yet, which means they might bring him back.

At this point, Beaulieu, Tinordi and Pateryn need to play because it's both smart and cost-effective. That money needs to go towards improving the O.

Heard Fayne was interviewing with 7 teams. We'll see if there's a bidding war for him, he was a guy I pegged as undervalued but with the market as it is he might not be. Haven't heard anything on Gilbert yet.

Yeah, from the advanced stats perspective it's pretty clear Emelin has put up his best numbers with Markov, where he plays RD. But Markov is worse with him. It's on Emelin more than what side he's on.

http://stats.hockeyanalysis.com/showpla ... t=5v5close

Corsi with each defender... (Zone Starts factored largely out)

Markov (Emelin at RD): 47.1%
Gorges (Emelin at RD): 44.3%
Diaz (Emelin at LD): 42.1%
Kaberle (Emelin at RD): 42.9%
Weber (Emelin at LD): 36.6% (how much is at F though)
Subban (Emelin at LD): 42.6%

Markov without Emelin: 53.2% (noteworthy, mainly with Subban)
Gorges without Emelin: 49.2% (noteworthy, mainly with Subban)
Diaz without Emelin: 51.1% (Markov/Gorges)
Kaberle without Emelin: 46.1%
Weber without Emelin: 47.7% (forward issue)
Subban without Emelin: 51.8% (Markov/Gorges, some Gill)

This is why I want him dealt this week before his 2 year NMC clicks in. Markov is the best spot for him and it's not a great situation for Markov. Maybe he can click with a Beaulieu or something but I'd rather play Tinordi at RD, keep the physical play, have someone better adept with handling the speed and save the cash for forwards, or invest in a real RD like Fayne, Gilbert or Stralman. Weaver could serve as a stop gap to Tinordi entering the top 4 if the team projects that from Jarred.
