Oh, and McCarron is a bust. They ruined him by making him second-guess everything, like every damn prospect who's played for Lefebvre/Therrien, and when the speed of the game increased, it only magnified his poor decision-making.

Habs sign Notre Dame captain Jake Evans to a 2-year ELC. Bergevin can breathe a sigh of relief.

Habs sign SEL C Lukas Vejdemo to a 2-year ELC. He's 22 and a former 3rd rounder in 2015.

Bit of a mystery man. Came up through Djurgardens Jr to pro, had a breakthrough offensive season with 22 points. Right size at 6'2, 194.

Will likely start in Laval. With Evans and Vejdemo potentially there next season, the time is right for the team to find an actual good AHL coach.

The thing about De La Rose and Vejdemo is you might not get enough offence from them at 3C and 4C, but they have wheels. If the Habs feel they need to get faster, locking them into the bottom-6 is a potential way to do it.

Habs add a pair of undrafted LD from Czechia: David Sklenicka and Michal Moravcik.

The both played at the Worlds in Denmark. No idea if they're any good or if they're coming over, presumably to play in Laval.

Habs have some new prospects thanks to a fruitful draft. 11 picks!

The big catch is future 1st line centre Jesperi Kotkaniemi. He'll likely stay in Finland a year, dominate the men's league, and come over in 2019. Compared to Barkov and Kopitar.

Finnish W Jesse Ylonen is a speedster and playmaker.

Russian LD Alexander Romanov is a classic Timmins hipster pick: only Bobby Mac had him top 100 and Habs took him 38th. He's lightning fast, aggressive and can hit. Emelin on Red Bull, someone observed. Scouts are divided on his potential, but Timmins said he killed it in a North American tournament on small ice.

Swedish C Jacob Olofsson was projected to go first round, so a nice late-2nd value pick. Sounds like he has tools but is a bit soft.

People are also sorta stoked for Cam Hillis and Alan McShane, productive OHL kids who slipped due to positionality/personality reasons.

Finally some good news after a few lean years: Habs have the 6th best prospect pool in the league according to the Athletic.

They project Kotkaniemi as elite.

Very good: Ylonen, Poehling

Legit: Juulsen, Ikonen, Primeau, Olofsson

Have a chance: McShane, Brook, Fonstad, Fleury, Evans, Hillis, Bitten

Romanov called up to CSKA in the K! Take that, haters!

Habs finally have potential up the middle with Kotkaniemi, Suzuki, Poehling, Danault, De La Rose, Evans, Vejdemo

Kotkaniemi frankly looks ready in preseason, but they should resist the urge to rush him and send him back to Finland.

Suzuki got sent back to the OHL, while Mete-Juulsen have been used as a pairing the whole camp.

He needs another development year to facilitate long term growth. Pre-season is different than the regular season grind. They'll probably keep him....

Give him 9 real games and if he crushes it great but the slightest hint of struggle either by him or the team send him away.

I think that's what they'll do. Added wrinkle: his Finnish team sucks this season. Not sure if that's a good thing or bad thing for his development.

After 7 games, Kotkaniemi has three assists and besides faceoffs has held his own in a sheltered role. You see flashes of amazing potential every night. He's going to be a star one day, but probably not today.

The consensus seems to be that he'll get more than 9 games, but if after 25 games he's struggling, they won't mind moving him back to Finland or even Laval, which is now on the table. I'd send him back, but what do I know, other than watching prospect after prospect get rushed and ruined in Montreal.

Quiet season down on the farm, but new coach Joel Bouchard has whipped into shape F Jake Evans and C Lukas Vejdemo, who walked into Laval as borderline NHL guys but are now taking on a bigger role down there.

Both should compete for 4th line gigs next season.

Cole Caufield immediately becomes their best goal scoring prospect.

By the book draft for the Habs. Intrigued by overager Mattias Norlinder, crazy good skating defenceman from MODO.

The analysts seem to love their Day One, and was pretty lukewarm on their Day Two.

Very jealous of y'all. Caufield's gonna be a super-fun player to watch. I'd say he's Brendan Gallagher with more scoring talent, but every bit as scrappy. Put him next to MAGA or Kotka and hell yeah.

I don't necessarily fault other teams for going with the more projectible centres, but with Kotkaniemi, Poehling and Suzuki already in the fold, the Habs needed goals. They got the best scorer in USNDP history.

CC will play one year at Wisconsin and go straight to the NHL.
Ylonen and Romanov are looking good in their senior leagues and contractually can come over next season.
Poehling, Suzuki, Fleury, Brook will likely all be with the big club by the end of this season, barring injury.
Vejdemo and Evans will also get callups this season, could push out the team's mediocre 4th liners.

This team could look a lot different come season opener 2020-21.
