The new Laval arena (Place Bell) is supposed to be finished by 2017, but after their mayor got arrested for being massively corrupt, the arena got put on hold for a bit. They've started up construction again, but who knows when it'll get done.

I can't remember when the Habs extended their lease with Copps/Hamilton to, but there had been talk of moving the Bulldogs to St. John's a couple years back before the Moose went there. All this was seen as a holding pattern until Laval.

That said, there's recently been talk the Habs will take over for the Manchester AHL franchise with Los Angeles moving their affiliate West. It might be possible the Habs stay there for a couple years until Laval's rink is built.

Who knows how long the Jets will want to stay on the Rock, though. They could see Hamilton as attractive. It's been a good run for the Habs in Hamilton but it's gone bad under Bergevin competitively and perception wise. Magnus Nygren's brother getting mugged was probably the final straw in that. Bring 'em nearby, up the training capacity (they should be able to use Brassard) and see if they can sell more tickets.

Oh no, Magnus was proven right. Hope he doesn't pack it in again.

To be fair, it was in Burlington, I believe, not Hamilton.

Nygren has had a shitty year. Not so much in the playing bad dept., but he got a concussion about a day or two before the Habs called up Beaulieu in late November, and apparently the Habs were going to call him up. Then the Habs wouldn't let him recover in Sweden, fearing he'd just stay there again, so his brother came over. And his brother got mugged. Meanwhile, he's barely playing due to said concussion and Beaulieu is now in the top 4. Who knows if he'll get any chance to show his stuff.

Nygren's going back to Sweden to heal up. Poor kid actually sucked it up and tried to make a go it in Hamilton, and then this happens.

Thomas scored his first goal and De La Rose has basically taken Eller's job.

Habs might have a couple of keepers there.

It's a shame the only chip the Avs have to deal for Eller is Ryan O'Reilly, and they don't really need him.

Is this baiting me to comment? Is there a set limit of two quality two-way forwards that the Habs are allowed at any point in time? And why would a 19 year old take the job of a quality 6 or 7 forward who plays more often than not with lesser players than him and does quality work on both special teams units?

And yet when De La Rose and Eller are on the same line, it's the 7 year vet that gets moved.

They could easily have both, especially since Malhotra might not be long as the fourth line centre if he can't at least get a whiff of a goal.

Look, I like Eller, and long ago accepted his lack of offensive upside and hockey sense. I think he's a quality third line centre and his contract reflects the going rate for one.

De La Rose is quickly asserting himself in the lineup, though, so there might be some rearranging as a result.

Eller produces at the rate of a 6 forward, low end 2nd liner. That's nothing to scoff at, especially considering he's usually the most talented member of his line. If, for some reason, the Habs decided to pair him up with Pacioretty for a run like they have with the other 3 centres (DD, Galchenyuk, and Plekanec) I'm sure we'd see a big spike in his points as well. We certainly did when he played with Galchenyuk and Gallagher.

There's no need to rush JDLR. If he can take the 4th line C spot that's fine, that's exactly what Eller did at age 21 with the Habs. But JDLR is known as a guy that can play all 3 forward positions so if he's good enough to play with Eller then I see no reason he can't get a shot at LW there.

But that's all just future talk. The Habs are in audition mode right now with their prospects and even if JDLR shows he can play a shift in the NHL that doesn't mean he'll play much longer. He gets 9 games this year max due to the CBA issues. The Habs are almost certainly trying to acquire a veteran forward to add for the playoff run, and maybe one of these young forwards gets exchanged in that trade (almost certainly not JDLR, more likely Thomas or Andrighetto).

Zach Fucale is 16th in the Q in SV% at .885.

Yeah, that's not going to cut it. If you look at all the goalies who made it out of the CHL no one posts SV%'s like that in junior at age 18 or 19, often not even at 17. No one should be counting on this guy making it to the show. If he does, consider it a pleasant surprise.

From this week's 30 Thoughts

Quote:
6. When last season ended, Bergevin had high praise for Lars Eller. He pointed out how the Canadiens were wiped out by Ottawa after he was injured in 2013, then went to the Eastern Conference final with the centre healthy in 2014 — one point behind P.K. Subban for the team’s playoff scoring lead.

“I have a saying,” Bergevin said. “There are players who get you in and players who get you through. Lars gets you through. When the chips are down, and the games are big, Lars is at his best.”

Montreal is searching for size, especially up front. He’s a bigger player. Said one exec, “I have no idea why they would want to trade Lars Eller.”

Erik de la Rose, Jacob's brother, is apparently trying to find out through Eyes on the Prize writers whether Jacob is going to stay up beyond the 9 game mark. Looks like his family knows what he's facing now.

De La Rose scored his first two big league goals in tonight's win against the Jackets. He's quickly fitting in.

The AHL's rookie of the month? None other than Union College prod Daniel Carr. Ten goals in 11 games!

Expectations are never too high for those undrafted college overagers, but maybe Carr has a shot of making it.

UND forward and Habs prospect Mark MacMillan suffered a lower body injury and is out for the season. Also the end of his college career.

Now the Habs have to decide on whether they want to sign him. Good college player, but who knows if he'll be anything more. Centre, leading goal scorer on his team and finalist for the conference's defensive player of the year award.

Tinordi out at least three weeks. Possibly longer.

Meanwhile, Pateryn may have passed Beaulieu on the depth chart, at least temporarily. He's been great. Brings a physical edge but isn't a slouch in the skating department.

Nygren signs a one-year deal with Swedish team Farjestad.

Dude had a lot of bad luck in Hamilton. Hope he has a solid, healthy season back home.
