Well, good time to review what's happened with our prospects since this thread started:

Canadian Hockey League (includes QMJHL, OHL, WHL):

P.K. Subban, D (19): 43rd overall, 2007 - Belleville (OHL)
Olivier Fortier, C (19): 65th overall, 2007 - Rimouski (QMJHL)
Jason Missiaen, G (18): 116th overall, 2008 - Peterborough (OHL)
Robert Mayer, G (19): undrafted free agent signing - Saint John Sea Dogs (QMJHL)

Subban and Fortier have been signed to entry level deals, and will join Mayer in the Habs' system full time in 2009-10. Missiaen will return to Peterborough as the team's #1 goalie right out of training camp, and will hopefully fare better than last year in order to earn a contract.

American Collegiate/Junior Hockey (includes NCAA and USHL):

Phillippe Paquet, D (21): 229th overall, 2005 - Clarkson (ECAC)
David Fischer, D (20): 20th overall, 2006 - Minnesota (WCHA)
Ryan McDonagh, D (19): 12th overall, 2007 - Wisconsin-Madison (WCHA)
Joe Stejskal, D (20): 133rd overall, 2007 - Dartmouth (ECAC)
Andrew Conboy, LW (20): 142nd overall, 2007 - Michigan State (CCHA)
Scott Kishel, D (19): 192nd overall, 2007 - Minnesota-Duluth (WCHA)
Danny Kristo, RW (18): 56th overall, 2008 - Omaha (USHL)
Steve Quailer, RW (19): 86th overall, 2008 - Northeastern (HE)
Greg Pateryn, D (18): 128th overall, 2008 by Toronto - Michigan (CCHA)
Patrick Johnson, C (19): 206th overall, 2008 - Wisconsin-Madison (WCHA)

Paquet is now a UFA, as the team did not sign him by the collegiate deadline. Fischer will return for his senior year at U of Minnesota. McDonagh was traded in the Scott Gomez deal. Conboy has now turned professional with a 3 year entry level contract. Kristo is moving to the University of North Dakota this coming season, while all the other players will continue their collegiate careers with their schools as listed above.

Kontinental Hockey League:

Konstantin Korneev, D (24): 275th overall, 2002 - CSKA Moscow (KHL)
Alexei Emelin, D (22): 84th overall, 2004 - Ak Bars Kazan (KHL)
Maxim Trunev, C (18): 138th overall, 2008 - Cherepovets (KHL)
Alexander Perezhogin, LW (24): 2007 RFA - Ufa (KHL)
Pavel Valentenko, D (20): suspended by team for breach of contract - Moscow Dynamo (KHL)

Not much new to report here, aside from noting that Valentenko was also part of the Gomez trade. Perezhogin is currently a KHL UFA, not playing for Ufa. :psyduck: At least, word of him signing a new KHL deal hasn't surfaced yet. I guess he's the Alex Tanguay of Russia or something. Anyways, Korneev apparently re-upped for a year with CSKA, and Emelin for 2 with Kazan (with an opt-out option after 1 year supposedly).

European Professional (includes SEL, SM-Liga, DEL, etc.):

Nichlas Torp, D (19): 163rd overall, 2007 - HV71 (SEL)
Marvin Degon, D (24): 2008 RFA - Wolfsburg (DEL)
Janne Lahti, LW (25): 2008 RFA - Jokerit (FNL)
Andre Benoit, D (24): 2007 RFA - Södertälje SK (SEL)

Torp signed for two more years with HV71, who might join the KHL by that time. It's hard to imagine a scenario in which Degon or Lahti will be brought back, while Benoit is giving Hamilton another go after 2 years in Scandanavia's top leagues.

Next up, I'll re-do the first post on this thread with a fully updated prospect listing.

Perezhogin would be great on The New Habs. Underrated player, has the speed and defensive awareness to flourish under Martin. His only real problems in his first stint was inconsistent offence and too many penalties - both easily fixable now that he's older and has experience being a go-to guy.

Ladies and germs, introducing Mikael Johansson:

http://www.montrealgazette.com/sports/W ... story.html

And here's a snide little shot at Carbo based on the role of Guy Boucher trying to make Johansson feel more comfortable from the folks at Lions in Winter:

Quote:
"I sensed that he was a little shy when the camp opened," said Guy Boucher, the Hamilton Bulldogs head coach who has been overseeing the camp. "I asked the assistants to talk to him and he's responded well."

Sensing?

Sensing and then communicating?

I thought shy players were there to be either a) mocked, or b) ignored for 8 months...

I thought about putting this in the Goaltending Controversy thread for kicks. But then they mentioned Subban as a Honourable Mention, so it was either here or the Bulldogs thread. Should probably stop spreading the wealth so much since we don't seem to talk about our prospects too much anymore, either from the farm or elsewhere.

Anyways, Cedric Desjardins is on a hell of a run in Hamilton. So is P.K. Subban. And Apparently Ryan White is lighting things up since being sent back after not technically being called up.

Someone on HF had this to say about Desjardins' development and gives a lot of credit to Patrick Roy.

SergeConstantin wrote:
I would say he's probably too soft with his goalies sometimes... never ever blaming them in the media as he does with the players. He had some success with them. Cedrick Desjardins was undrafted when he arrived in Quebec. He was playing with the cup winners the year before, but he had Sidney Crosby in front of him, so he could give 5 goals and it didn't matter! He wasn't that good in Rimouski. After his one year in Quebec, where he won the Cup, he was signed by the Canadiens and now he's the one of the best goaltenders in the AHL and will probably get called up if Montreal trades one of Halak/Price. Kevin Desfossés was another success, 14th round pick of the team... he became one of the best goalie in the Q league, he's now playing with Dallas' farm team. And then, Charles Lavigne, who had never been a starting goalie before and ended the year on the second all-star team.

Really, I could name a few flaws in Roy's coaching but goaltending's management isn't one of them.

Too bad he couldn't do the same with Peter Delmas...

A couple of Bulldogs/Prospects related items here:

http://www.thespec.com/Sports/article/709678

Mathieu Carle is done for the year. He separated his shoulder, which has had some issues in the past, and now has to undergo a major surgery to correct it. He's remaining positive on the news, saying that this way he can get the issues corrected, have the shoulder properly rehabbed and strengthened in time to fully prepare for next year's training camp. It was his best year to date, and Boucher called him the team's best defenceman, and perhaps more importantly: "he was right on the border of the NHL."

We'll see how this works come next year, but for now expect only Weber and Subban to get a callup in case of injury. And there is some murmurs that the Habs will do a minor league trade to acquire a d-man for the Bulldogs' playoff run.

Also:

http://www.aftonbladet.se/sportbladet/h ... 6466492.ab

Mikael Johansson has given up and bolted back to Sweden. It was worth a try, I suppose, but I guess he didn't work out. No sweat off our back, we maintain his rights if he thinks he's more ready for a shot in a year or two.

Also of note, prospect G Petteri Simila, the Mr. Irrelevant of last year's entry draft, was traded at the deadline in the OHL and then waived, so I think his major junior career is done. I saw him play a single period during the WJC's, and he allowed the worst goal I saw all tournament. He also got scored on by fellow Habs prospect Maxim Trunev. He may be big, but he's got a LONG way to go. Timmins had hoped to draft Mikko Koiskinen the previous year, but elected not to, and said that decision is the reason he went after Simila. I think he missed out big time.

Apparently Simila has signed a two year deal with KalPa Kyopio of the SM-Liiga.

BTW, 2006 first rounder David Fishcer? 4 assists in 24 games in his senior year at the U of Minnesota. Time to call him a bust, not sign him and take the second round pick as compensation.

For the record most all of the Gophers are having a nightmarish season, including Jordan Schroeder. Guess losing Ryan Stoa hurt more than they expected. :spid:

I also read Minnesota is earning a rep for screwing up the development of future NHLers, which is why the Isles wasted no time in signing Kyle Okposo.

No surprises here, but Leblanc is named Ivy League rookie of the year. He leads the Crimson with 21 points and 11 goals this year, with 7 goals and 11 points in 9 games against fellow Ivy League teams.

Ugh, so the AHL playoff rosters were announced and guess who didn't make the cut? Andrew Conboy.

He can only play in the postseason if 3 Hamilton players get called up, which won't happen.

Based on his size, average skating, mean streak and obvious lack of offensive upside it was felt he was going to be fastracked to the NHL, where he could quickly assume a 4th line pest role. Alas he won't even make it out of Hamilton.

Granted he was never a well-regarded prospect, to use a Brian Burke simile he would have been like a found wallet.

Hamilton may be adding a defenceman: Fish Daddy!

http://www.thespec.com/article/738751

BriseBois also has his eye on undrafted college free agents. Someone with jam please.

Wow, talk about non-committal. I still don't think he should be signed. Give him a two year deal for the league minimum in both the NHL and AHL so he can reject it and we get a 2nd rounder when he signs elsewhere. Apparently you have to make them an offer to get the compensation pick.

There's got to be better guys who are free agents than Fischer out there. And even if they are only as good as him, you get a 2nd rounder by choosing those other guys over him.

And the Habs have their man, signing Ohio State forward Hunter Bishop to a two-year deal. Like current Hab Scott Gomez, Bishop is an Alaskan.

And yeah, that's his real name. Silly Americans.

Bishop was at the Development Camp last year.

Oh look, there's a blog devoted to him! Of course, it's incredibly boring.

Speaking of Alaska and BCHLers, plus very American names (though he's from Victoria), perhaps this guy can take Fish Daddy's spot in the organization:

http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdis ... pid=102287

TCL's link from Red Line listed him as the top NCAA free agent defenceman. Perhaps fellow Victoria/BCHL/NCAA grad Ryan O'Byrne can give him a nudge to the CH.

I think the Habs will be busy signing free agent prospects this year. Not a lot coming from our own draft picks that are ready for pro this year. Good thing legendary Metis warrior Gabriel Dumont turns 20 and just potted 51 in his final year in Drummondville.

Danny Kristo is your WCHA Rookie of the Year. So between Kristo and Leblanc (Ivy League winner), we have 2 of the NCAA's top rookies.

Hockey's Future continues to baffle me with their ideas of just what a prospect is. How you can call yourself "Hockey's Future" and not include an examination of guys like Pacioretty, Sergei Kostitsyn, Carey Price, Jaro Halak, and even Benny Pouliot when discussing Montreal's future is beyond me. All are under 25, on cheap cap friendly deals and have impressive upside.

In a cap world, a prospect to me falls under those paramaters. Anyone making less than a million bucks in salary and is under 25 should be judged equally. Simple, easy to understand method.

Even by their standards, why they don't do a feature on "graduated" prospects is beyond me. If they've graduated, with what marks have they received?

Just realized Brock Trotter, he of 31 goals and 67 points for Hamilton, is not in their top 20.
