This was a bad season. Sure, Price, Gallagher and Petry were out for stretches, but this team folded up like a cheap tent. Bergevin has yet to make a big move and Therrien looked hopelessly outmatched without his MVP in nets.

There are PK rumours, which I think are hogwash.

Unless/until Therrien decides to break them up, it seems like the Habs have a bonafide first line of Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Gallagher heading into next season. The second line consists of ?-Plekanec-?, so get ready for another offseason where Bergevin is expected to add offence. He hasn't done it yet.

The team needs to figure out what to do with Eller and Desharnais. Both come with the same cap hit $3.5M. If Galchenyuk is at C, Plekanec is back and Danault and Mitchell (with McCarron and Hudon potentially in the mix) are all there, that leaves too many centres. Both are adequate third line centres, but this team needs top-6 guys, and neither fit the bill.

Byron will be back. Flynn could be dealt, but he's a soft enough cap hit. Looked decent enough when he was healthy.

Andrighetto and Carr looked fine in their auditions. Both RFA's. One-way deals for both? Danault was ok. Matteau isn't an NHLer.

On D, if they don't make moves they'll have:

LD: Markov, Emelin, Beaulieu, Barberio
RD: Subban, Petry, Pateryn, Dietz

Pateryn was a big minute man when the games stopped mattering. Dietz looked ok too. I think the team liked Barberio more than I did.

If the Habs need to move a defenceman to get offence, Beaulieu is still a valuable piece. Barberio could slide in.

In goal, pray for Price. Condon was thrown into the fire and the numbers weren't pretty. He wasn't supposed to play 50 games, though.

As far as AHLers go, I think Hudon is more likely to start with the big club next year than McCarron and De La Rose. The big men could use some seasoning. DLR especially looked awful during his late season callup. A bit disconcerting.

So that leaves us with:

Pacioretty-Galchenyuk-Gallagher
Eller-Plekanec-Carr
Danault-Desharnais-Andrighetto
Byron-Mitchell-Flynn

Markov-Subban
Emelin-Petry
Beaulieu-Pateryn

Price-Condon

Habs need to bring in a top-six forward. Maybe two. Plenty of UFA's out there.

Everybody back except Craig Ramsay. Ok then.

Bergevin: "It's not my intention to trade PK Subban."

Bergevin basically said:

Trades are bad because you're plugging one hole and opening another
Free agents get too much term, are tough to attract because they get many offers
Draft picks take a long time to be good, and non-lottery picks have major deficiencies.

So how is he going to improve the team, then? Sounds like he's afraid to mess up a big move.

They got the space to make a run at Stamkos?

If UFA stuff is too scary big time offensive help is either going to have to happen via lottery win or trading this or next years first...also scary.

Guess the good and bad with things staying the same is add some health and the early season team or something closer to it could show up.

Frölunda win the SHL championship. Habs draft pick Artturi Lehkonen scored two goals in the elimination game. He was awesome.

Habs need him next season. He's a winner.

Habs will pick ninth in the draft. Unlikely said pick will be able to help the team out immediately.

Interesting link to our own Haboteur is that Leaf Prospect Andreas Johnson played on the same team as Lehkonen and was sent to join the Marlies when his Swedish team finished it's season.

Just don't let your Patrice Bergeron, Ryan O'Reilly, Vlasic or Shea Weber slip to the second round. Pretty simple strategy, really.

I'd love for the Habs to trade up and draft Dubois, but as far as forwards go these guys are more likely to be available:

Tyson Jost C BCHL 48-42-62-104 6'1" 195
Logan Brown C OHL 59-21-53-74 6'6" 218
Clayton Keller C USHL 23-13-24-37 5'10" 168
German Rubtsov C RUS 28-12-14-26 6'1" 176
Michael McLeod C OHL 57-21-40-61 6'2" 187

Add Lehkonen to the list of potential forwards in the lineup next season. Unless he looks totally overmatched in camp, I imagine he's coming over with the expectation that he'll play for the big club.

In Andrighetto, Carr and Lehkonen, the Habs have three forwards who might end up top-six guys at some point in the season, but likely won't start there.

Could the Habs have a crack at Dubois in the 5 slot? This is the Canucks pick.

From your point of view, what would he Habs be willing to give up for that pick EL?

Habs are lacking in attractive, cap-friendly assets to trade. Beaulieu, basically. A package of Beaulieu and Fucale is about the best the Habs can do, which is not enough.

Good thing that's not what Benning is looking for.

No. He's not moving the pick - it was just a hypothetical.

It was a crack at Benning not exactly making attractive, cap-friendly trades so the Habs can give up something more expensive and less attractive to get it. ;)

Condon, Desharnais and a 2nd should do it.

Huh...that's weird. I thought St. Louis was keeping him around as the heir apparent to Hitchcock.

I guess he was told it wasn't going to happen.

Muller is an associate coach, which is a step up from assistant. Muller really is the perfect foil for Therrien: PP expert, outgoing and good with the players.

Various offseason goals:

Sign Stamkos
Trade for Nugent-Hopkins
Offer sheet Kucherov/Forsberg
Take a flyer on Yakupov
Convince Shipachev to come over
Draft Clayton Keller (if they stay at 9)
Steal Julien Gauthier in the second round

If they accomplish a couple of these I'll be happy
