I finished residency 10 years ago , Habsy..but happy to give my 2 cents The disclaimer of course, is that there a few different scenarios that could be at play here, and the Habs org. is tight as a nun's c**t with their info. When I see Friedman tweeting MCL however, I think we have to pat attention. I maintain that a knee injury didnt really jive with the chronology of this. An MCL would usually be more predictable. A meniscus should have been repaired by now.
Of course, another possibility would have been a groin injury, or what is called a "sport's hernia" (a groin injury, which is not a true hernia...a misnomer). I spoke with several local orthopods (some of which are big Habs fans) that agreed this was a good possibility, given the uncertainty of return. Another possibility would be a hip issue (labrum for example). MCL was always a possibility, especially since he has a history, but as I said, it should be more predictable. Less commonly, however, we could be dealing with a higher grade MCL that is not healing non-operatively, for whatever reason. This can be an indication for surgery, however, it could be an indication for more rest and less immediate rehab.
I think the jury is out on this . I would love to be behind closed doors. I think we all put a lot of faith in Friedman. I havent seen his tweet, but if he in fact said this then the explanation would be that the degree of injury was underestimated. It doesnt necessarily mean surgery. The main indication for this would be complete rupture, which MRI should show. The other indication would be persistent instability or non-healing , despite non-operative treatment. I obviously havent examined him, but he doesnt look unstable on ice, just sore. I think the jury is out as do my colleagues. Hope that makes sense, as I've had 4 shots of Glen Breton prior to typing..
