It's a long form piece, worth the read.

Yet another enforcer suffering the effects of the game. Something has to be done.

Matt seemed to have some trouble early on that only got worse after hockey.

Seems to be an opportunity for an aspiring hockey journalist!

Find these guys

Stu Grimson
Donald Brashear
Marty McSorly
Tony Twist
Terry O'Reilly
Matt Barnaby (yeah he had a lot of fights)
Rob Ray
Joey Kocur
Dale Hunter
Rick Tocchet
Tie Domi
Craig Berube
Chris Nilan (f'n a Nuckles!)
Tiger Williams....

find out how they are doing. Let their story be told.

Knuckles hosts the mid-afternoon show on Montreal sports talk radio. He's not a natural radio guy but he's a solid story teller and players really open up to him. He has his demons but seems to keep them in check these days thanks to his lady, his dogs and frequent Hawaii trips.

We see the issues that some of the NHL guys have had and the tragedies from their earlier deaths. I imagine that the stories from the minors and even juniors might be even more frightening...

Grimson works for NHL Network as an analyst, he also recently got engaged.

If there's one former enforcer out there I'm worried about it's Scott "The Sheriff" Parker. He's done relatively well for himself, starting a barber shop business out of the Springs and shows up regularly for alumni events. However, a recent story about him had some disturbing things to say about his mental well-being. He thankfully gets good insurance through COBRA, and his wife says he needs it, at times he has displayed erratic behavior and sometimes just shuts down, according to her. I don't have the exact quote so I'll have to look for the story, I think it was in the DP.

Sometimes we don't see it either. From what I understand Wade Belak was a pretty witty, gregarious guy and radio/TV personality, and I don't think anyone thought he would take his own life.

Nilan is the main focus of a documentary called The Last Gladiators. It was on Netflix for a while. He's had a fucked up life, which got way worse for a while after hockey. Serious anger issues, drug addiction, etc. I think a few of those other guys are mentioned in The Last Gladiators as well.
Looks like it's not on Netflix anymore, but some of it is on Youtube.

Really think we ought to start an official CTE thread. Thinking about this tonight led me back to Steve Montador......

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Montador

This is truly something the NHL should recognize and deal with.

Although I do feel it was part of the game....the game has become more civilized if we call if that and the men that paid the price should be taken care of.
