Chuckie out.

Whoever the new guy is, he's got his work cut out for him. Two key players (Dumba and Zucker) need new deals, and not a whole lot is coming off the books this offseason. Also...Suter and Parise are both still signed for many more years, and both suffered major injuries to finish off the season.

From Friedman:

Quote:
Leipold made it clear his vision is a Stanley Cup in the next three or four years, but the biggest obstacle may be the prime-aged players and how they performed. The Wild know what they are going to get from Mikko Koivu, Zach Parise (when healthy) and Ryan Suter. Fletcher re-stocked the cupboard with some promising youth, like Jordan Greenway. Mathew Dumba was a top-20 defenceman in points and goals, so he will be due a big raise. He was also one of the few who played up to potential in the post-season. At different times, Fletcher considered moving Charlie Coyle and Nino Niederreiter. There was interest. He decided to hold, and they were shut out by Winnipeg. Their futures will be an important decision for the new GM.

Man, Coyle and Nino could fetch a lot on the open market. Good chance to retool and get whatever they think they need to build around the big three.

Looks like it's down to Nashville assistant GM Paul Fenton and NJ assistant GM Tom Fitzgerald. Fenton was the odds-on favorite early on. It'll be interesting though as more and more players I remember from my formative years get these front office gigs (Fitzgerald, Guerin, etc.).

The thing about Fenton is the Nashville gig is his if he wants it when Poile retires, and I think David is just holding out year to year in the hopes of a Cup. Then again, Fitz is also a former Pred and can jump into the GM-in-waiting role if need be.

Fenton gets the nod.

Good luck dude.

Side note: It was reportedly Fenton and Avs Asst. GM Chris MacFarland who got the Duchene deal going again after it had stalled. They happened to run into one another at a scouting gig and started talking.

What's the verdict on that deal, anyway?

Turris really flopped in the playoffs, but he's signed long-term at a decent 2C rate.
Girard is all that and a bag of peanuts.
Duchene will be trade bait in his walk year.

So we know who LOST the deal, but we don't know who won yet.

Well...NSH paid a pretty hefty price but they have a lot of assets to spare so they could afford it. OTT couldn't but did it anyway.

I think if Kamenev and/or Bowers turns out to be a legit player, Girard continues to develop, and those picks are parlayed in some way into at least one star player then the Avs win this one in a landslide.

The Preds just need to figure out how to use Turris properly. One of his best assets is his shot, which wasn't used very much since they like feeding the puck to Ellis/Subban for one-timers. He's also kind of a perimeter guy and the Preds are all about gritty play. If Laviolette and his staff are as good as their rep they'll figure out how to use him properly and maximize returns.

Unexpectedly quiet summer so far for the Wild and new GM Paul Fenton. Got Pateryn for the bottom pairing at a decent rate.

Dumba gets 5 years, 6M AAV. Okee dokee.

Suppose that's the freight for a 24 year old D-man with a PPG % of .410

I know he hit career highs last season, but is he that good? This is high second pairing/nearly top pairing money.

They've got a pricey Top 4 in Suter-Dumba, Brodin-Spurgeon making 23M. I don't see enough of the Wild to make a judgment call.

Given his numbers and the comparables making similar coin, that's not a horrid deal, but it carries some risk. Mike Russo was just on NHL Radio and said they expect it to be a bit of overpayment in years 1 and 2 but good value for the remainder, which means they're betting on him to take another step forward in his development. It's a decent bet to take.

I don't think he's elite by any means but for a team that's getting increasingly old and slow he's gonna be a core piece behind the inevitable rebuild. He's a good puckmover and is a big-time difference maker in OT, where the Wylde struggled to start the season until Bruce started using him more exclusively. Yeah, it's an expensive blueline but given the long-term commitments this club has made there wasn't a whole lot you could've done, especially after sacrificing Haula and Tuch so the Vegas wouldn't take him in the expansion draft.

Zucker locked up: 5 years, 5.5M AAV.

Minny has about a million in wiggle room if they stay as is. Already at 68M for next season.

Post subject:  Re: What now?

Might have been opening night doldrums but Minnesota looked very old and very slow last night. The "kid" line of Coyle, Greenway, and Eriksson Ek was drubbed so badly they reportedly didn't register a shot attempt for until the third period. Ryan Suter looked a bit off, understandable given how serious an injury he is still recovering from, but he also played over 25 minutes. Boudreau's playing with fire if he continues with that.

Mikko Koivu and Zach Parise did look very good however. Dubnyk kept the Wild Boys in it Varly-style but IMO he gave the Avs some prime opportunities they failed to capitalize on.

I think Boudreau will unfortunately pay the price for his now-fired GM's folly (for the third time), which is a shame because I'm not sure he'll get another gig at this point.

Weird offseason for Fenton. Came in and didn't do anything.

This feels like a lost year for the Wylde in a really tough division. They have a lot of talented players and a mercurial goalie so they could still make the playoffs, but they seem prime for a collapse.

Well, there probably wasn't much they could've done. I'm sure he tried to drum up interest on Coyle and no dice. Last night definitely didn't help matters. If he was going to do something big about the only things he could've done would've been to deal RFAs Dumba and Zucker.

But his additions were kinda curious. For a team that probably wasn't exactly fast to begin with, adding Hendricks, Pateryn, and Fehr (emphasis on Fehr) don't help matters.

I'm sure they'll manage to put together enough to make the postseason, but I don't see how they manage a deep run with this roster.

God I hate this team...just talented enough to go on runs like they're currently on, but fall apart in the regular season. I suppose if they somehow get their two big-contract players to stay healthy most of the year and into the postseason they may actually make a real run of it.

And Fenton's first move is a predictable one, moving out Nino Niederreiter's contract to Carolina for Victor Rask. Rask only has one goal this season, so I'm assuming he'll welcome a change in scenery.

Power forwards develop slowly and get bumps along the way, so it's not out of the question that Nino gets his mojo back.

Post subject:  Re: What now?

Both players have had a rough couple years, but Nino is the superior player. He's also a tad more expensive.

Don't like this deal for Minnesota, but it's not the highway robbery some on Twitter are making it out to be.

Zach Parise is having a comeback season at age 34. If they blow that, what was it all for!
