Holy spit is this team bad.

Matt Luff has also been a bright spot. 4 straight games with a goal as a rookie filling in for Hagelin.

My God...Vancouver must have broken Willie’s mind. His comments on Kovalchuk were...yeesh.

Totally those comments were way offside. Dude is an offensive producer, period. 9 mins of ice time tonight though, so he's on the up and up.....

But man, the Canucks sure got Willie D'd tonight in a 2-1 OT road win. What a fugly mucker game. Willie is very limited as a coach mind and will do whatever it takes to slow down the game and clog the neutral zone into a snore fest. So lame. The Kings have now found a way to grind out some wins. Quick back and will likely play the next game in Edmonton, although they don't really need him.

Gabe Vilardi ruled out for the WJC tournament.

If this kid plays even one NHL game it'll be a small miracle. Dude is the hockey equivalent of Greg Oden.

Oh boy...Quick gets taken out by Dion Phaneuf, Canes score, and Willie decides not to challenge for goalie interference. Quick does NOT like that decision and lets his coach know.

Kinda sad that given the complete arbitrary-ness of the rulings, Willie probably should have challenged, even though it was clearly Phaneuf being a moron that caused the "interference" to begin with.

This team has almost 9M in cap space. Crickets in LA LA Land. They stink, but they've got prospects coming. Vilardi, unfortunately, is still rehabbing his messed up back and won't be in rookie camp.

Also, the Kings made a big push for NCAA UFAs and none of them have worked out so far. That's Brickley, Rempal, Eyssimont, most notably. Hopefully Lizotte isn't another.

Lottery team? Quick comeback?

Quicksand Lottery Pick. Jack Campbell's the man.

For a minute there I thought they'd find themselves in the "Florida" spot--not good enough to make the playoffs but not bad enough to get a good pick either.

But on second thought, I think they're a lottery team again, and are fully prepared for that scenario.

One guy I just can't figure out: What the hell happened to Tyler Toffoli? That dude was well on his way to being a perennial 30-goal scorer when his game just completely fell off a cliff about a year-and-a-half ago.

Kopitar dropped 30 points and Carter put up 33. Not exactly primo guys dishing to him anymore.

Wonder what Prokhorkin will do this season.

Ben Hutton finally finds a home and signs 1 year $1.5M deal with Kings. Could be good value but might just be meh.

Teams were not fooled by the high ice time: this guy is borderline.

Ilya Kovalchuk effectively joins Don Cherry in the pasture.

https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/280 ... -kovalchuk

Can he leave for the KHL, thereby allowing the Kings to just terminate his contract?

Yes heard a report that he can. That would give the club $6M+ in Cap relief. Why would he do that if he is still getting paid though? Apparently he can practice with the team but will not be playing any more games. Not a player Todd McLellan thinks he can win with. Major distraction. :D

Kovy's 36, he doesn't have many years left to play. I don't think he cares much about the money, and can still make plenty AND play in the KHL.

So yeah, the Kings are trying to force his hand to duck out on yet another horrible contract. At least this is being done with more dignity than the shifty bullshit they tried pulling on Mike Richards.

Oh yes, Mike Richards. What ever happened with that? Presume that the Kings didn't get away with that crap and a lawsuit was settled in Richard's favour?

The league "settled" with LA on a buyout with a cap hit of $1.32 million annually, the last installment of which happens this year.

Now they're saying Kovalchuk is set to be released.

Turns out even if he bolts for Russia, the contract can be voided but the cap hit stays no matter what. Those 35+ contracts are more ironclad than a billionaire's prenup.

How much more can the Kings tear down? Doughty and Kopitar are likely staying. Brown, Carter and Quick have ok AAVs but a lot of term.

Martinez an easy move, ditto Toffoli. Forbort too if he gets healthy. I'd move Iafallo before he gets to his walk year.

In other words, not much.

At some point it's going to end ugly with Quick. But...I think everyone knew it would the moment he signed for a frickin' decade.

Kings may be able to turn it around in 2-3 years. They're tanking (whether it's intentional or not I can't tell but they are nonetheless) so they'll be getting yet another good prospect out of this mess. That on top of Kupari, Turcotte, etc. should bear fruit soon. By that time guys like Kopitar and Doughty won't be huge impact players but they should still be viable NHLers. By that point they'll probably have Petersen as their full-time goalie and Campbell as a capable 1B.

Losing the gambit on Gabe Vilardi really hurt this team. A shame because I really think he would've been a stud if his body had held together.

I wonder if Rob Blake survives all this. I don't necessarily think he should be fired--he only did what ownership wanted him to do--but the Kovalchuk signing was a massive misfire, along with some other bad moves.
