Kevin "I think I know a thing or two about winning" Lowe is out of hockey ops in Edmonton. Bob Nicholson is wasting no time.

Took long enough. Oilers fans everywhere are rejoicing.

Bob Nicholson is wasting no time? His audit took a year to complete!

It takes a lot to make a stew
A pinch of salt and laughter too
A scoop of kids to add the spice
A dash of love to make it nice
And you’ve got
Too many Cooks
Too many Cooks
Too many Cooks
Too many Cooks...

Shit, I wasn't sure if he had the positional authority to make the change until his recent promotion. If it took him a year then yeah, that's too long.

Even then, Katz doesn't have the balls to fire him, letting him keep a bullshit token position. Oh well, Oilers fans are likely thrilled.

This new "president" position above the GM is kind of a new development isn't it? I wonder who started the trend. Was it Davidson in STL?

VP or whatever...it has been around before. Jimmy D still oversaw everything when Holland officially became GM. Ken Dryden with the Leafs. I guess there are differences in the position based on hockey/business power.

Ronald Corey had a ton of sway in Montreal.

It's true that Nicholson didn't technically have the authority to make changes until recently, but he also literally didn't finish his audit until the end of the year.

I guess when you're trying to document all the rot in an organization like the Oilers one can have the tendency to get carried away. The important thing to note here is that Kevin Lowe now has the same authority Mike Milbury had with the Islanders when he stayed on after being removed by Wang in 2006.

Chiarelli needs a Chara to really get this turnaround going. Mike Green ain't it. (Or is he? Haven't watched him closely in a while.)

Well, no, he's not Chara. That's a pretty once in a lifetime type opporutnity.

But they should still go for Green as a starting point.

The interesting thing with McDavid in and Lowe gone, and a new rink around the corner making up for the fact that Katz has let the ice at Rexall become shit after being considered the best in the NHL through the mid-00s, will UFAs start buying Edmonton as a viable place to sign with again?

The exchange rate alone means your dollars go a lot further in Canadian markets now then they used to.

Chiarelli said the Oilers need to get heavier. I guess we know where Lucic will be headed.

I'm a little weary about Chiarelli's knowledge (see Seguin, Tyler).

But, Edmonton has been afraid to move its young prospects for more immediate help, and Chiarelli directly spoke to that. And I think that making those type of trades is the only way Edm will build a team - and maybe a winning team. There are a lot of holes in Edm that can not be filled via drafting because the timelines won't work. They have to trade some of their forwards for defensive help.

Oh, wait, he's Prez AND GM? I thought MacTavish was retaining his position but he's "out" too.

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=7650 ... l:topheads

So both Lowe and MacTavish have token positions. What would make things interesting is if they pulled a Rutherford and dumped the "presidency" for another GM spot.

The team has stockpiled enough prospects. They need capable defencemen, grinders, a responsible checking centre and a goalie.

They still have that Dubnyk guy, right? Maybe he'll be something?

Nah, he'll never be anything.

Pretty much a given that Todd McLellan will be named the new head coach of the Oilers.

Trotz and Ruff quickly found new digs after getting fired from their longtime posts, and both seemed pretty energized with their new clubs. I suspect something similar with McLellan.
