Yeah, it's one thing to eat some remaining salary/cap hit for the season. But he's got 5.6M remaining over 2 years and Washington wants out of that.

Is he still a decent player for his cap hit?

Panik's an average bottom-6 guy now and fading fast. You got a first to eat the contract so you can imagine how awesome he is.

Stevie Y done loaded up for the next two drafts. I imagine he'll continue to stockpile for a while.

https://www.capfriendly.com/teams/redwings

Friedman said in a recent 31 Thoughts pod that the Wings reassessed their situation and concluded the rebuild isn't quite where they originally thought it might be, so that's what prompted them to deal Mantha. That's a good conclusion to take as opposed to other GMs who would try to take shortcuts (hello Don Waddell's "five year plan") to stay on schedule.

Apart from those gawdawful Reverse Retro uniforms, it's hard to say that Detroit has made any really poor decisions since Yzerman has taken over.

You deal him now and you get better lottery tickets who will hopefully be ready to contribute on the cheap when they're ready to compete. Had to be done, unfortunately, much like Tatar and Nyquist.

Stevie Y is doing the rebuild properly, but it'll be a slow one.

Astounding that the Wings made no bones about what was to be accomplished this season and yet they're not even in the bottom five of the league. Buffalo rounding out that bunch is no surprise, but I didn't realize New Jersey was THAT bad this year. Lumbus's recent shift into full freefall has also edged them past the Red Wings.

It's a grand irony that Detroit may actually benefit from the bullshit lottery system that totally screwed them in the last draft.

Sabres are the new Oilers. Wasting their way through lottery picks.

Actually, if the Devils win the lottery again, I think they take that title. Three first overall picks in what, four years!?!?!?

Yeah, it was started 3-4 years late and set back even longer by Kenny trying to extend the playoff streak.

Can they win it again under the new rules?

New rules don't apply to this year's draft IIRC, they kick in next year.

To be truthful, the draft lottery is kind of a real crapshoot this year. There was very little Canadian Major Junior hockey played this year so how do you fairly judge a lot of this year's draft-eligible players. That said, one of Detroit's real needs is at goaltender and so long as they remain in the top five they should have a real shot at this year's top goaltending prospect, Jesper Wallstedt. Owen Powers of the University of Michigan at defence could be a nice pairing with Seider if by chance Detroit does get a little lottery luck.

New Red Wing, Jakub Vrana, scored 4 goals against Dallas tonight giving him 5 since he arrived in Detroit as part of the Mantha trade. The other piece of the trade, Richard Panik also scored his first goal as a Red Wing. Luke Glendening and Sam Gagner scored one goal each. The Red Wings beat Dallas 7-3.

Drafting goaltending is voodoo, Skip. Results with drafting a goalie in the top-15 is a total crapshoot. Only two have been take in the top-15 in the last decade. I'd stay away from drafting a goalie if I was Stevey Y.

Do you think they sign and hold onto Vrana, or deal him?

Still a little frustrated that I don't think Yzerman weaponized his cap space enough. Iyer suggested offer-sheeting Pettersson.

https://www.wingingitinmotown.com/2021/ ... n-part-3#0

Quote:
Alright so let’s bring this back to the Red Wings. Why would a rebuilding team such as the Red Wings consider making an offer sheet and giving up the draft picks they’ve worked so hard to obtain? Well, let’s take a look at some of the players eligible to sign an offer sheet this summer:

Elias Pettersson
Andrei Svechnikov
Cale Makar
Miro Heiskanen
Brady Tkachuk
Pettersson, Svechnikov, and Makar in particular are franchise players and they are all 22 years or younger. Next season, Pettersson, Svechnikov, and Makar are projected to be worth 2.9, 2.5, and 3.4 wins respectively per Dom Luszczyszyn’s GSVA model.

Iyer says that If Yzerman is going to do this, he should get Dougie Hamilton as well. There's zero sense in turning over those draft picks to Vancouver if you're not going to drastically improve your team from being near the bottom of the league. It's also going to take a lot of faith in Seider, Raymond, Berggren and Veleno to be willing to make the offer sheet.

Veleno? Not sure about him anymore. Is he anything but a depth guy at this point?

Only 21 with a year in the A under his belt. He played at the WJC last year!

I thought Veleno always was a depth guy, like a high-end third liner.

Anyway, Vrana had an okay game the other night...

Jeff Blashill says Dylan Larkin will miss the rest of the season with an upper-body injury, will be re-evaluated in a couple weeks
