Longtime Wings defender(and Leafs center) and HOF member Red Kelly will finally get his #4 raised to the rafters. He was a top defenseman in the league for a long time winning 1 Norris, 3 Lady Byngs and finishing top-3 in Hart voting 3 times, an impressive feat on a Wings team with Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay and Terry Sawchuk. He won a total of 8 Cups, 4 each with the Wings and Leafs.

This is a good move to see from Chris Illitch at the helm. A lot of Wings fans thought this should have been done a long time ago and have wondered why it hasn't.

According to hockey-reference.com, 31 other players have worn the number 4 since Kelly donned it for the first time in 1951. It appears Jakub Kindl will be the very last player to wear it in Detroit, which was back in 2016.

It'll happen on Feb 1 and appropriately, before a game against the Leafs.

It is way past time to retire this number and associate it with Kelly's name. The driving force behind this appears to be Marian Illitch, who is still the team's owner.

I am also surprised that the Red Wings are still debating retiring Sergei Federov's number 91. I thought it was a done deal. Apparently not.

Seriously...!? Of course you retire Fedorov's number. Good heavens, get over the ugly divorce and move on.
