From DGB's first-ever piece for The Athletic.

Quote:
Director: Thanks for understanding. Feel free to stick around while we run through a few more auditions. OK, first up is, let’s see … Henrik Zetterberg.

Zetterberg: Hi everyone.

Melnyk: Wow, thanks for coming out Henrik.

Zetterberg: Hey, my pleasure. I always wanted to try out this whole interviewing thing. Gives me something to do in retirement, you know.

Melnyk: You’re retired?

Zetterberg: Uh…

[Ken Holland appears in the window, making a throat-slash gesture.]

Zetterberg: Something to do while I’m injured. You know, as I work my way back from injury so that I can resume my playing duties under my contract without triggering any cap penalties. Which is totally what I’m doing.

[Holland does the eye-point move.]

Zetterberg [under his breath]: Yzerman’s totally replacing you.

Uh, Ken. You're out of the playoff picture. Still teams on the outside looking in trying to make it, or looking to load up. It's time to start dealing. Wake up.

A lot of teams are dragging their feet. I can't help but think GMs are in a big staredown contest, and the looming expansion draft, are cooling activity we'd normally be seeing around this time.

Jensen dealt for a 2nd round pink and Madison Bowey. Jensen had really improved on the defensive side this season so its a little tough to see him go considering he's younger than a bunch of guys still on the roster but is 28 and a pending UFA.

As per Micah Blake McCurdy, Madison Bowey is bad.

Bowey was highly regarded in junior. Could be a late bloomer.

I don't think Bowey is the main piece in this trade for Detroit. It's the 2020 second round pick.

Welp, back in the day I thought it was dumb that Holland couldn't have gotten Johansson.

Quote:
26-year old Marcus Johansson, 24 goals and 58 points last season with a ~4.5M cap hit, gets moved in the Capitals cap crunch to the Devils for a 2nd and a 3rd rounder. Gee, if only Holland had some fucking draft picks to move for a player like that???

Now, with 27 points in 48 games, Johansson netted the Devils more than Holland did for Nyquist who has 49 points in 62 games. Whether it's because of the GM on the other end of the Johansson deal in Sweeney, or because Holland didn't play his cards right, this leaves me a little underwhelmed at Nyquist's return.

From the exact same post about Johansson:
Quote:
Goalies are getting moved and signed all over the place and yet Holland cannot somehow find a taker for Mrazek?

Holland was apparently saying that there was no market for goalies. Where in the fuck has he been for the last few months while goalies were shitting the bed for teams in playoff positions?

Daley not moved, but Vancouver managed to move Gudbranson?

Not happy with yet another deadline. Too little. At least last year Holland made a fantastic deal trading Tatar.

It's pretty much what I expected, Jeff.

Wings make some interesting signings, including a couple former Avs players.

C Valteri Filppula, 2 years, $3 million per
G Calvin Pickard, 2 years $700K per
D Patrik Nemeth, 2 years, $3 million per

Obviously they're all cheap depth for a rebuilding squad, I'm guessing they try and sneak Picks through waivers, hence the extra year to try and deter anyone from making a claim.

Nemeth is a good third pairing guy. Improved his puck skills quite a bit to at least passable status from his previous season, though he is still prone to just fling the puck the length of the ice when it lands on his stick. Decent size, physicality, and wheels, and an okay shot-blocking guy on the PK. So long as he's not put too high in the lineup Detroit fans should like him just fine.

Does it mean Kronwall is done, or is this just Kronwall insurance?

In what I'm sure will be a trend, Yzerman trades for forward Adam Erne from the Tampa Bay Lightning.

I honestly didn't even know until I happened across Detroit's Cap Friendly page and saw he was on there as an unsigned RFA.

Erne on a line with Bertuzzi

Well, that was unnecessary. I really don't think Steve Yzerman would let him decide whether or not he could play another year if he didn't believe him to be capable of holding down his job. If it had been Ken Holland I might have my doubts but I think Yzerman was brought in to complete the rebuild not continue the old age home for former headliners.

Ericsson waived in the final year of his deal after returning from injury.

https://www.freep.com/story/sports/nhl/ ... 063815002/

He('s) played over 660 games with the Wings after being the last pick of the 2003 entry draft and converted to a defenseman. Pretty impressive(though I know Skip's not a fan of his lack of physicality - I do want to say he's stuck up for his teammates).

It wasn't his lack of physicality that irked me as much as his lack of mobility. He reminded me of Willie Huber. I always thought he was a pylon on defense. I do wish him the best and I do appreciate his loyalty to the Red Wings.

Steve Yzerman is quoted in the Friday Detroit News, "Our goal is to acquire more draft choices' before the trade deadline." A TV/video interview with Red Wings radio play by play announcer Ken Kall is included in the article with Detroit's 1st year General Manager. For me, Yzerman has been letting this season play out perfectly. I like that we will probably see Joe Veleno and Moritz Seider in Detroit for a few games toward the end of this season. Both of them looked good when I saw them in Grand Rapids earlier this season.
