Since it's behind a paywall, I'll just do a quick recap--he goes on to say BOTH goalies might be available and any player not named Larkin, Athanasiou, and Mantha could be had for the right price. The bad news is that goalies just don't fetch a ton in return usually.
The biggest need for Detroit is defensemen by a large margin. They need to get younger on the blueline.
Kenny erred so fucking badly the past few years in misjudging this team and they are cap fucked because of it right now. He so badly needed to move at least one bigger contract this past offseason using draft picks and didn't.
Next offseason, the follow players are RFA: Mantha Anthanasiou Larkin Bertuzzi Frk and Marazek.
Aka the total future of the forward corps.
They have a projected 12.8 mil cap space right now.
Kronwall has one year left.
Ericsson has two years left.
Daley has two years left.
They are going to need to shed themselves of at least two of those deals, unless they deal Mrazek or Howard. They have defense in the minors that will play on a non-playoff team, hell they'll be better than what they have. Villi or Hronek could probably already run an NHL PP better than Kronwall.
Nyquist has one year left at $4,750,000. I think you move him and you should get something decent for him. He's 28 and he'll be too expensive and on the decline(29) to keep after the 18-19 season. I've enjoyed Goose, but I think he's gotta go. Fuck the Abdelkader, Helm, Nielsen and Glendening contracts...my god.
